Is the price of gas also high in Russia? I think high gas prices are a great thing. They will force people to be more conservative, and the auto industry will eventually make much more fuel efficient vehicles.
Here are a couple of articles about available technology, which can make future engines at least 25% more fuel efficient:

When I crossed Russia 2 years ago, gazoline was about 35 cents a liter (10 rubli).
Russia highly benefits from high oil prices since it s the world s first producer and exporter, as well as for gaz. The natinalisation of the biggest oil companies like gazprom should allow the redistribution of the conjunctural wealth to russian citizens. |

| Do you really think that the oil wealth in Russia is trickling down to the common people? I'd like to hear some more Russians give their opinion on this one. |

This is one of the worst and most confusing argument of those that naively think that the fact the industry is in government's hands makes it fair and forces it to redistribute the wealth among its citizens. In fact, the opposite is true. When the oil industry is in the government's hands, especially in a country where the legal and judicial systems are not developed, this leads to widespread corruption and theft. The only reason why russian oil industry is being effectively re-nationalized is to bring outrageous profits and payouts to those at the top. In the developed west, pivate oil companies pay corportate, income, investment and other taxes that get redistributed to the citizens. That's the best way to stimilate investment and make sure the redistributons are fair. In Russia, most of the money that is made is made in the energy markets. And they are increasingly controlled by government interest. No, these are not the public servants making average salaries and giving the rest to the people. Those are the people that built opulent mansions in Moscow, drive expensive cars, dine in exclusive sushi bars and have private homes in London, Monaco and other fancy places... |

At 10 dollars a gallon in Europe, consumption is barely weakening. The prices can go way higher before fossile energy become a luxury . |

I would also like to get the opinion of russians living in Russia, not expatriates that don t live modern russian realities and fled their patry rather than trying to change it. MrSpice wouldnt even be able to tell something as basic as the current price of gasoline in Russia. |

First of all, I was in Russia last summer, know many peolpe who live there and follow the news of what's happening in Russia, including russian newspapers and TV stations (I don't watch them as often as CNN, that is true). The fact that the oil sector in Russia is replete with corruption is known. The fact that thos in power want to control most of the energy resources not for the people's benefit but for their own financial benefit is also well known, not only here but on the Russian streets as well. When I was in St Petersburg in June of 2005, the gas cost pretty much the same as it did here in the US. It was about 16 rubles a liter or $2/gallon. |

Why am I poor and what did I say that was not correct/true? Or you're just like making negative comments about me whether it makes sense or not? |

No, thank you, siree. I also wanted to check out more insights about Russia since I haven't been there in a while. Frankly, I don't give a flying f*** what some people's opinions about Russia are here. Most of them never even LIVED there, so thats where it would be appropriate to STFU. arghhh |
Actially this due - Vital Signs - that they were referring to was an active participant on the forum and lived in russia for many years and was born there. He disappeared from here a week or so ago |
