We would appreciate suggestions on centrally-located, reasonable, clean, safe hotel or hostel lodging in Moscow. We will be traveling there in July.

Unfortunately, nothing can be recommended. All hostels are quite crappy, the hotels are overpriced.

The only options if you want to save money and get something relatively good, is to rent a "budget" apartment at http://apartments.waytorussia.net or find a homestay at http://flatmates.ru/eng/

Both are our sites and we control the quality. Cool

I agree with the other poster... the hostels that I've seen are not that nice. It's possible to get an old hotel room around that price in far away places, and I did find some bargain renovated rooms, but these are nowhere near the center of the city. In the center, the Warsaw Hotel had the best deal. They don't deal with the online reservation companies though.
