We are now preparing a printed edition of Way To Russia guide.
Could you tell us how much you would pay for it? Please, be sincere and realistic, as it takes some $$ to gather all information, put it into the guide book, and then get it printed and distributed.
Thanks!

Hi,
If you find the right way to distribute it, it's a very good idea. If the news will be as accurate as the website it will beat most travelguides, so it's no shame to charge 20$.
I think that you where the only site where I found the info I needed! |

Thanks, iwan.
Speaking of distribution, if there are any people here who would like to distribute the guide (once it is ready) in their own country, please, let me know (via private message). Like this we will be able to save on post expenses, allow fast delivery, and let some people make their share of $$ on the great product. |

I'd love to see a Russia Guide as good as the WTR website is; unfortunately, as with all timely printed material, it will be out-of-date before it ever hits the newstands, particularly in the areas of accomodation and restaurant pricing. Even the website has some problems in keeping up with the current volatility, particularly in SPB and Moscow.
Having said this, there is still a great need for such a book, particularly if it meets two specific criteria: (1) it must never lose sight of the low-budget (and extremely low-budget) traveler and, (2) it must be well mapped. There is an almost total dearth of good maps of both Moscow and SPB that extend beyond the center. For example, I have yet to find a street-by-street map of St. Petersburg that extends even as far out as the last stops on the Metro. This connects to criterion 1, in that more and more of the less-expensive hotels are some distance from the center.
Good Luck with it. |

| Hopefully, it won't detract from the online guide. There is a disparity of information between Lonely Planets online and printed guides, to the disadvantage of the online, since their interest does seem to be to force you to buy the printed guide to get prices, recomendations, etc. for accomodations and restaurants. |

timewriter,
Thanks for your suggestions.
The maps are difficult though, because to draw them is a *really* long process, and to license them costs so much, we would have to sell the guide at $100 at least...
The guide will surely have central maps of all major cities and information where one can find complete city maps (both shops and internet sites). |

| Although I voted for not more than $10, I would be willing to pay $15. Twenty is a bit much unless the information is stable. Using the website as a supplement in this regard, for example, to update on prices or new (or no longer) homestays would definetly make me more amenable to the higher price. |

Hi,
I would be happy to pay $20 for a good book about russia since they are a little hard to find. But If you are thinking a smaller book or pamphlet then I would be willing to pay less. It also depends on the amount of research that is placed in the book. I would be more inclined to buy it if it offered a more accurate or indepth biew than lonley planet books and it it had the budjet traveler in mind.
The first thing I do before buying a travel guide is go to the library(or book store, look at all I can for a specific country, and then choose the one that has the best focus for what I want. One of my biggest problems was with maps in Russia. My map would be in roam charachters and of course the street and subway signs would be in cryllic. I did figure it out, but it took a couple of days and a lot of nice russians. |

Lonely Planet guides are probably the best, and most well known travel guides among the budget (backpackers) and mid-range travellers. WayToRussia is the best website for travel information about Russia. If you could incorporate what everyone loves about Lonely Planet (well organized, accurate, useful information) with the unique information and support provided by this website, then you would have a popular product. If you are unable to include maps, then you must have a lower price than Lonely Planet, and have recommendations where someone can purchase great maps for their particular area of travel.
Perhaps you could join with a partner company that could send maps to people. When I was last in Moscow, I went to a store called "Atlas" (ul. Kuznetsky Most 9) and they had a large selection of street and road maps. |

| It depends on the size. A one off book like a Lonely Planet, yes, I'd think $20 would be OK. However, for a magazine-type publication, I think $5. |

Big thanks to everybody for your advices, we will certainly make sure the book is well organized and that it has up-to-date information, and has information useful for budget travelers too.
As for the maps, I think what we will do will be to include the maps we have on the website (in high resolution), and send really good printed maps upon request with the guides (if it costs $20-$25 we would attach the maps for free).
Do you think those maps would *definitely* need to be in English? |
