The first Russian people I had contact with were some pen-pals I had back in my childhood. They were very caring and generous, sent me nice presents, which was quite unusual for simply penpals from different countries. But those were commie days, Russian people were more open-hearted in those days to their commie friends, I think.
Then in US I met quite a few Russian women and they seemed very different from my initial idea, a bit cheap-looking and still...generous in their own way.

| My grandparents(fathers parents) were Russian, well actually grandmother was from Warsaw, Poland and Grandad was born in Odessa but lived In Russia until they came to US as stowaways during WWII. Unfortunatley they both perished while I was still in infancy, I can still somewhat recall the furnishings of their house and the aroma of the food she used to cook. Well anyway, I just wanted to share a story with some of you like minded people reading this forum, I think it's a nice place to converse. It is concerning a tradition of predicting a child's future, it has been disturbingly accurate in my family. Maybe some of you have heard of it. When I was very young my grandparents put several objects on the living room floor while I was in another room. Among these objects were a crucifix, a pencil, a wine bottle, and money. The idea is that when the child comes to the room and see the objects, wichever object that he or she is drawn to or plays with first, will be the path that the he or she follows in life. Amongst my grandparents children, one daughter grabbed a crucifix and later became very involved in orthodox christianity, one of the the sons grabbed the pencil, he became architect, another daughter played with the money, later in life she married a very wealthy man, and my father, unfortunatley grabbed the wine bottle, and he died in 2002 of liver chirosis. Now I picked the crucifix, however so far, I have not lived up to my end of the bargain. I wonder if any of the Russian posters have heard of a tradition such as this? |

there arent any rules. what you will find is that people in russia are by nature very secretive, and wont discuss sexual conquests around the water fountain.
there are also many other differences, ALOT, but the bottom liine is this - there isnt anything really called sexual harressment (sp?) here. ( company policy wise ) . |

| About 6 years ago, the local college in my hometown was looking for a host family for a young Russain man because the dorms close on the holidays and obviously the foreign students can't go home. My in-laws decided to be his hosts and they were his hosts for the next 5 years. In the meantime, my wife and I adopted a little boy from Russia and spent time with his family while we were there (3 weeks). The college student's mother came for his graduation a couple years ago, so we spent time with her again. Still in contact with Pter (the student) who is now living in Arizona as a teaching school. Since then we have met 2 Russian couples and a couple Bulgarians who live in our small town. |

| well when i worked as a costumer service helper in a grocery store( yeah i'm a teenager working durng the summer at a grocery store what a life... haha ok back to the story.) I was told that down the street at the gas station , there are russians that own the station, I never went to that station because another gas station was near my house so it was more convienent. Well one day the man who owned the gas station came in and my friend was like yeah thats him who owns it, he was tall, and the most lightest blue eyes I've ever seen he passed by and when he came up he had a huge thick accent which was cute by the way, and after customers are done paying we are told to smile and say have a nice day and i did , but he didnt smile or say anything he had the saddest look on his face, I guess its the myth that russians arent supposed to smile without reason?? But him and his friend always come in and they have the same look on their face, like they are upset about something, and their BRIGht blue eyes is almost hard not to look at. wish i could do something to make them smile... |
