This is a sad story but it isn't surprising to me. This is happening through out most of the former Soviet Union.

Just like when AIDS first came to America, there is a stigma about being infected. I'm glad that Russia had its first AIDS awareness thing today. I think there needs to be more thing like this to spread education and awareness about the disease so the stigma can end.

The saddest part of HIV is that it affects (infects) primarily the younger half of Russia's population (below age 30) who should be the future of Russia. Also because it takes so long for symptoms to manifest, many will pass the virus along before they even know they are infected with it. The early strains of HIV were primarily spread among drug users and homosexuals (activities which breach skin integrity) but the recent variants are much more easily transmitted thru heterosexual contact. This bodes ill for the young of Russia enjoying life. The lack of retroviral drug treatments options for the majority of infected people is a non sustainable position. Russia could easily develop an AIDS epidemic on the scale of that in Africa if officials continue to turn a blind eye.
Russia is a great country and has produced some great scientific minds and medical advances. There are physicians and researchers in Russia who know what needs to be done. The politicians need to listen to them and loosen the pursestrings on the country's cash surplus to increase research and treatment for its people. Russia is in a position to help the entire world (and its own people) or perpetuate this looming disaster for future generations.
Just the view from Texas, DennisF
