surfguy, One of your problems may be the amount of the value of the package. and also the contents of the package.
I think if you do some research you'll find out that about the limit on shipping to Russia is $100.00.
I had to pay some taxes once because the amount was about $125.00.
I always used USPS Express Mail to mail packages to my wife and we still ship that way to her family and friends over there.
Never send money in a package because it could cause some serious problems for your GF if it get's found in your package.
Some electronic items are also a definite no no going through customs in Moscow.
As far as her having to pay more shipping, I would discuss that with the courier.
You might as well cough-up the money or someone else may enjoy the contents of your package.

Tuller-you are so right and yes now I will never send cash again and I will be coughing up the money to get it back. What an ordeal to say the least!

I have a question.
I'm in Canada and my mother is in Russia I need to mail a package to my mom. I guess my best bet is DHL or UPS. Any advise, please?

According to how much this machine cost, your mail can be considered like importation and you will have to pay customs taxes.

It's just $200. I hope they charge me, not my mom.

Ok not sure on Canadian Postal Servis but I know that here in the US I found our US Postal System to be the best way to send anything to Russia. you shouldn't have any problems sending it as long as you put the value at less than 100.00. Fees would be nothing to minimal.

You should always send it "Registered Mail", I dont know if Canada has the equivalent to that.

We have registered mail service in Canada, but I find it very unreliable.

Hi Surfguy,
I was trying to send my old passport to Russia via USPS Express Mail, and it got returned because Russian Customs did not let it through. I am not sure why they would not allow it to be mailed to its destination. Any idea? I am writing to you because you seem to have dealt with Russian Customs and know what's going on.
Thank you!

I just opened an account with DHL and they too said they were having problems with customs. But they are cheaper to use than FED EX. Which is good. Russian Customs is where I think the problems are. I will try DHL next time.

Well Princess...from my experience USPS is the best way to send...but too I wonder if customs refused your item because it was a government document? None the less I would contact to the Russian Embassy or Consulate and ask them what is the best way to send the item

I think you can also consider some local services for Gift and/or letter sending.
For example, www.gifts-to-russia.com - I used them for gift basket delivery to the office in St. petersburg.
These guys: www.RussianFlora.com also sometimes have curriers between US office and Moscow and can take some of the small parcels with them for a reasonable fee, yet it's not always available. Otherwise they deliver flowers in Russia.

Based on my recent experiences (if anyone is interested) of mail times, Sydney (Australia) to SPb :

Airmail Parcel - 2 to 3 weeks

Seamail Parcel - 3 months

I have been told the packages are often slightly opened, with small holes, as though someone was looking for valuables. They must be so disappointed at books etc.

Smile

I've had all sorts of airmail take from between 12 days and 31 days to reach provincial European Russia (same address each time) from Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. Nothing is standard it seems. Mail times aren't reliable.

For example, a postcard from Sydney may take 14 days to arrive. Then, another postcard from Sydney may take 23.

The only fact that I can rely upon (so far) is that my mail has always arrived at the required destination.

Another interesting thing to note is that I had 2 identical packages airmailed from London - one to Russia, and the other to my home address in Australia.

My package arrived in Australia 2 days ago (took 7/8 days to arrive). The other package to Russia (much, much closer to London) is still on its way.........
