hi all

have settled on camping around lake Baikal, have found many tour operators but am on a tight budget and would like to stay for as long as I can, well my question is this - can I simply pitch up any where around the lake, or do I have to stay at an actual camp site?

Yes, that's exactly what you do: find the spot you like and camp there. No need for campsites. Everybody does it at lake Baikal. Occasionally though, the "forest inspectors" may come up to you and ask you to pay a fee to stay at the grounds, which is not more than the price of a vodka bottle (about 50-100R = $2-$3). Just be polite and refuse and they'll leave you alone.

If you go to Olkhon island, there will be nobody disturbing you, the local people are very nice to tourists and you can live on the shore of the lake. See the photos at http://waytorussia.net/gallery/ to see what Olkhon is like.

I go there every year and we camp on the shore of Baikal there, it's beautiful and refreshing.

For nice spots, see Baikal guide (Olkhon island) at http://waytorussia.net/Baikal/ -- it's based on our personal experience, so you won't need more.
