Hi,
I'll be going to Russia (city yet undecided) in March next year. I have the choice between Moscow, Nowosibirsk, Krasnojarsk, Ufa, Tscheljabinsk and Ishewsk.
If anyone could tell me the best place to go on ski/snowboard trips or which city is closest to ski resorts, that would be very nice!
I've heard that in Moscow for example, there are some little skiing areas in and around the city...
Thanks!

Yes, in Moscow there are some. But will there be enough snow in March? May be you should better go to Karachaevo-Cherkesia (Donbai mountain and Elbrus)? |

ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.....hahahahaha. Enough snow for what?? Skiing? There should be enough snow for an avalanche at the Kremlin if last winter was any gauge.
Ski *resorts* in Russia are nearly non-existant. Although I don't have any first hand experience, of course there is skiing, but the lift/groomed trail/comfy lodge/hotel thing virtually does not exist in this country. Russia has a bid in for the 2012 Olympics and wants to develop the Sochi area into a civilized rendition of international ski areas. I'd be real surprised if they pull it off.
Moscow is basically flat-ish. No downhill. There is a lot of cross country skiing, but developed alpine areas? No. |

I think it is the same in Novosibirsk.
I have a friend there and she always talked about cross country skiing and never about down hill skiing.
Itis possible to do down hill skiing in Russia : I have seen a TV broadcast about people who rented an helicopter and jumped directly in the pant, it was in Caucasus mountains I think.
But for this you should have a lot of money and even more important : really good snowboarding skills |

I can assure you that if your girlfriend skis somewhere around St. Pete, ah, it's not the downhill. Unless she considers 'downhill' to be the equivalent of about 2 feet.
Most of western Russia (where the people are) is rolling to flat. No downhill alpine skiing, nyet. |

| I've done downhill skiing in the Altai region (Belokurikha). There are several downhill ski areas in that region. Some pictures and info here http://opengroup.info/sd/ski-sbr.htm |

Last March (in the first part of the month) quality of snow wasn't very good for skiing at our skiing resorts (in St-Petersburg) due to some warm days.
Near Saint-Petersburg there are several skiing/mountain-skiing resorts. Heigh of hillsides from 50 to 120 m and up to 1200 m long. Most of them have lifts. Last winter mountani-skiing resort "Igora" has been opened. It's the most comfortable resort in our region. |

South of Chelyabinsk near Magnitagorsk is Abzakovo/Bahnnoye. I hope to ski there in early January if its not -20 below Centigrade. The Ural Mts. have many sites but to get there you have to deal with the "fools and the roads" ;-D |
