Today is the 10th anniversary of the Russian Internet. 10 years ago the .RU domain zone was registered. I remember I first encountered internet in 1996 when it became something Russians vaguely started to hear about...

From Gazeta.Ru 8 April 2004:

"Late last year, Regional Network Information Center director Alexei Lesnikov said that as of 2003, there are over 214,000 registered domains .ru, Russian media reported. Meanwhile, in the first three months of this year, research centers registered about 21,000 new .ru domains (a 9 percent growth rate, up from a mere 6 percent over the same period last year). As of March 31, 2003, there are 235,000 domain names under .ru.

Ten years ago very few Russian people knew what the word Internet meant. Today, there are as many as 14.6 million users, which is 13 percent of the population. "
