I have one night in Irkutsk on my way from Beijing to Moscow (I know that's not enough!). I'd appreciate any advice on the best use of this time. I arrive at 0830 Moscwo time and leave at 1630 the next day - so I think in local time that gives me the afternoon and nearly a whole day.

Should I head straight out to Listvyanka and stay the night there? Is it easy enough to get there - I don't speak any Russian. Or would I be better off basing myself in Irkutsks? Also any recommendations for accomodation in either place would be gratefully received!

If I were you, I would go straight to Listvyanka to get a glimple of Baikal. It would be a shame to pass 60 km close to the biggest and deepest freshwater lake in the world and not to see it Smile

If you don't speak English, you can still manage to get a public transport or a taxi to Listvyanka -- all the information is at our Baikal and Irkutsk Guides (see http://waytorussia.net/Siberia/

If you are not sure if you will be able to do it, you can order a transfer from Irkutsk to Listvyanka. It won't be too expensive, but you will see Baikal, which is very great. I wouldn't say that Listvyanka is a beautiful place, but there are walks along the shore and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Besides there's a good range of accommodation and nice local smoked fish, which you should try.

And hey, don't be afraid to miss your train, even if it happens the worst thing is that you will lose your ticket, but then you'll get the pleasure of a spontaneous trip. So, I think if you really feel like you'll want to spend more time at Baikal, change your ticket and go to Olkhon island.

That's great! Thank you. Any recommendations for places to stay in Listvyanka? I'd prefer not a home stay, because I have little time ;-( and have to register my visa

Thanks again for advice!
