Hi all,

I will be travelling from the 21st of November to the 3rd of December in Vladivostok, Irkutsk and Moscow and I am wondering what I should take/buy for the trip. I know it is going to be very cold that time of year but should I go out and buy some expensive Gortex down filled jacket by Kathmandu or The North Face before I leave Australia or would I be better buying something in Vladivostok? If I was to buy something in Vladivostok would I pretty much freeze in regular clothes even if they are layered as soon as I step off the plane? Also, how easy would it be for me to buy a nice fur coat or shoes when I don't speak a word of Russian (I intend to teach myself some basics while I'm there of course ie. numbers)? Thanks.

Vladivostok is less cold than Siberia, as it is by the sea, so you should not worry too much about that particular place. Clothing is not cheap in Russia though, so you'll probably be better off buying something back home. You can buy the shoes in Russia though.

Fur will be expensive, especially a 'nice' one. Down feather jacket will do fine, just make sure it's not a waist-length one (it won't keep you warm). You can easily buy fur-lined shoes I think.

What do you mean by expensive? I just ask because a decent Gortex down filled jacket here will cost me around US$300-400. I think I may leave buying shoes until Vladivostok as you have suggested though.

Add a zero the the cost of your gortex jacket (which is fine), and you can get an average fur coat.

Just a note to say that my 50% goose down Lee branded waist-length jacket did me fine in the -40 snaps in January, obviously it wasn't the only item I wore.

G'day,
After nearly dislocating my spine several times slipping on ice, I wandered into a shoe store and tripped over a Russian brand - RALF. They had a pair of almost Doc Martin types, fur lined, wide foot spread with a soft rubber sole. Magic! No more slipped discs and bruised elbows.

About 110.00 Aus and damn good value. Probably gone up since then. BTW "RALF" is signed like that in shoe stores. Not the cyrillic, so easy to find.

Oh yeah...It appears to me you can't walk 50 metres without finding a shoe store or a shoe repair store!

Sorry, no pics as my wife has the digicam and she's still there.

Enjoy
