Upon visiting the Hermitage, Catherine's palace in Pushkin, and Peterhof, does anyone know how much the photo fees are for cameras in Rubles? Also, do they allow purses, small bags or knapsacks inside? What about jackets, umbrellas esp if it's raining? Do you have to check this in at the entrance? How much is the fee? Are you also allowed to take photos inside the churches ie Church on Spilled blood, St Isaac's and at the Church at Peter and Paul fortress? Are there photo fees as well? Just trying to prepare for upcoming trip. Thank you for any advice. Very Happy

As I remember the photo fee is from 50 to 100 rubles ... but it's for Russian.

Most places allow photography with a permit, though I took photos all week long without buying a single permit - Church on Spilled Blood is worst for busybody permit checkers - we just said we didn't realise we needed a permit when my friend was asked for hers. At Peterhof in the Grand Palace your permits are checked (if your camera is fairly obvious) at the entrance after the cloakrooms.

Most places don't charge for depositing your belongings in a cloakroom, though the guy at the Artillery Museum tried it on when I was there the other week.

As mentioned the photography fees are usually R50 or R100 - if you get in at a concessionary rate then your permit may cost more than your entrance fee.

I managed to get a fairly large bag into the Hermitage and I saw people with even larger items of luggage. If you are turned away at security then try the other checkpoint (as I did).

if it rains at Peterhof then all the buildings close pretty quick from what I gather.

I remembered the camera permits are about 100 roubles usually. They seem to be stricter in checking at the Hermitage, and inside Peterhof. Phototaking in the gardens of Peterhof is free, unless you want to get into a roped-out area to stand within the fountain area, then there's usually a lady there who collects some money.

I took a digital camera in my trouser pockets mostly. I wasn't asked to buy a permit in either Peterfof or Hermitage. You don't stand out as a tourist as well. Though my friend compensated for the last thing by reading aloud from his booklet on Piter in the streets :S
