I know Pyatigorsk like the back of my hand. I was there visiting a girlfriend for two weeks a year ago. You have to get there by train. You can fly into a city nearby named Min Vorty (mis-spelled) by the service is a little "spotty" and the terminal is sort of like a Mexican bus terminal. Pyatigorsk was warm the whole time I was there and they have a lovely promanade and streetcar (Tolly) system. The place is noted for it old health spas and you can take short day trips to the surrounding towns in the nearby mountains. For a few bucks you can take a tour bus into the mountains at Dom-Bi. This place is sort of deserted by still has functioning chair lifts. It once was the primer ski resort for Russian big shots. But, like everything else in Russia, there isn't much money for maintenance now!! Let's put it this way.., I'm sitting in a lifr chair with a busted safety chain up at 9,000 ft.., and looking up at another 4,500 ft of crytal clear mountain.., also, this was the farthest south the German forces got in WW II. Tip: Alway carry toilet paper, and watch were you step in the forests and parks. When a Russians' got'a go.., they go..(smile)!! Always take some "small" Russian money with you.., nobody on the street could change a hundred dollar bill..., hit the banks for sure. When they give you large bills, just keep saying "ma-link-ka"..., smaller, smaller!!! Surprised)
