| He needs the experience of participating in the chaos of the Russian roads to prepare him for the unbelievalbe mayhem of motorcycling in Vietnam. |

I respect people’s opinions in this thread, but I dare to think differently.
My sister used to live in Moscow and she always tells me about this trip she made with an Austrian girl, some Scandinavians and some Latin Americans. They rented two cars in Moscow and spent a couple of weeks driving around other cities.
They had no problems at all, so I guess it’s perfectly doable.
I’ve never driven in Moscow, but I did drive in Belarus. I felt it was nice and easy.
In the other hand, I do agree with everyone regarding public transportation. It’s very reliable. Therefore, I agree you don’t need a car to move around inside the cities. Renting the car might be a good idea if you want to go out exploring the countryside and nearby smaller towns in your own pace, having the freedom to stop wherever you want. Just prepare yourself properly in advance, that is, get familiarized with the local regulations, have your documentation in order and follow the general common sense routine. |

So you have no experience whatsoever driving in Moscow, yet confidently assure our poster that it's easy. |

Did I assure the poster it’s easy driving in Moscow? No. I said I drove in Belarus and I found it easy there. Belarus isn’t Russia, but it’s a similar place. Minsk isn’t Moscow, but it’s also a large, somewhat similar city. So given the similarities, I felt it was worth making that side comment. Yet, in the bit of my post that you quoted, I clearly referred to Belarus when talking about my own driving.
I did tell the poster my sister drove in Moscow, and that she found it easy. I don’t see the problem with that. Being a close relative, is it not ok for me to trust her judgment? She had no problems with bureaucracy, police or anything to that effect. No accidents, nothing. So I felt I should share my sister’s experience, since she has the right to think driving in Moscow is fine. Her opinion regarding this subject may be a minority on this board, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be posted. |

If oct631 is still looking at this thread, I suggest he will be okay. If he says he has driven a car in some countries in South America then he should be okay. A sense of perspective is required when dealing with replies. I don't see any signs he will not be able to cope.

Not to drag this out further....but....
I spent 25 years as a professional driver with a commercial drivers license. I've been in Moscow for 3 years and I swear I would absolutely never no way drive in this city. 25 years on the road and as far as I'm concerned, Moscow is completely out of my league. I can assure you my driving skills are excellent--maybe that's why this place seems so intimidating. Russians? Driving skills?
I'm used to order and predictability on the road, that's how you stay alive. We don't have that here. This is chaos. |

| the driving I witnessed there was the worse and all a bunch of crazies! I don't care how good a driver you are or where you have driven before...when there is traffic there is nothing you can do. And when it stops for 2 hours and you don't mve...well it's better to walk or take the metro. And that is reality! If you want to drive outside the city-fine go right ahead. |

to quote oct631
...drivers can't be any worse then those I've shared the road with in Nicaragua, Ecuador, or Indonesia...
I think the guy will be okay if he has driven in the places he says he has and so I'm with Sparks on this one.
