In an interview that was taken together with German Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel, Mr Putin has ensured that Russia is on it's way to democrazy. He stated that a free press definitely comes with that and that he will pursue to enlarge the freedom of press.

He said that all along while taking control of Russia's TV and making it more difficult for other alternative media to exist. No one should believe him now. |

| Well.. there we have another non-existant freedom in Russia. It takes a lot of courage for people who want to dig up the truth in their country, that's for sure. I hope they will succeed, in spite of the declining space the press seems to get from government officials. |

| At the same time it is encouraging to see people with the conviction of their beliefs getting coverage in the world press. With a lot of luck it could lead to something of a groundswell amongst the populace. |

Well, let's make it a running thread again. Anyone interested in this piece of news? Apparently the mentioned Ex-spy, residing in the UK was well-known with the circumstances around Anna Politkovskaya's murder:
LONDON (Reuters) - Ex-KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of his murder on Friday in a statement read out the morning after he died of an unknown poison in a London hospital.

| I wonder why AL didn't seek asylum in the U.S. instead of the UK? |

That doesn't seem too relevant to the issue. Maybe he knew more people in London already, maybe he was there at the time he needed to seek asylum, maybe he preferred the country to the US?
I'm much more intrigued by what is actually happening here. And kind of shocked by the lack of civil liberties in Russia at the present. Esp. with all this boasting about their 'economic development'. |

I think the answer to that question is that the 'people he knew' included Berezovsky.

Somehow that makes you feel less sorry for him. |

| What is happening with this investigation? As this case gets colder and colder and the evidence begins to fade, it is too bad that some international-based police unit could not work alongside the Russian police in solving this case. |

It looks as if her murder is related to that poisoning of that spy.

The Brits have just gone to Moscow to further investigate and have demanded that Russian authorities assist. No it is not a cold case and is on the news here everyday. The level of corruption is huge and obviously it is political |
