First off i would like to say this is an absolutly great site, it covers topics that frommers and foders would never cover! It also has opened my mind tword the Russian Federation( in a good way). Well this is the scenario, I am trying to decide about taking a visit to Russia. I have an inner calling to visit and just explore Moscow, St Pete ect. ... everything about Russia just seems so interesting BUT, I have a modest job as a laborer and make very little money, so what would the most economical route be for me? All the things i could find were like these package deals and thats OUT of the question. What would the best option be for me in terms of place to stay, food, various expensies.... what kind of cost would i be looking at for aabout a 2 week stay? Is it worth all the hastle to go it alone or should i seek a tourism agent and get some sort of package? All i really want to do is exorb the local culture, check out all the local treasures and just basicly have fun! I am not interested in being trapped in a group full of tourist wondering about for hours. Can a 19 year old american make it around the big Russian cities without knowning a lick of Russian!?!? If someone could shed a tad bit of light on what i have said it would be a great help Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Surprised Also if anyone knows of any good running/hiking routes around Moscow... i would be most happy! thanks again Wink

95Ford,
I can't give you advise, but I could make some suggestions for your travel to Russia. You might want to check out my post in the Business Idea's & Solutions in this forum. This guy could help you a lot in St.Pete.
You are part of a large majority of people, the working class. Most of these people would really like to travel, but usually they sit back in their chair saying I will never have the money, and just forget about it. It does take money to see Russia, but if you have the desire, and drive you can do it on a budget. It would probably be more of an adventure than doing it with a tour group. Research Youth Hostel's in Russia. I have stayed in one for $15 a day. Also check out Home Stays. This is living with a host Russian family. It is also less pricy than hotel's and is also a great way to learn about the culture.
In September the price of airfares usually drops pretty low, and it is less crowded. I bought a ticket last September for $572 round trip. I just bought one last week to travel in May for $931, but this id peek tourist season. Lufthansa was selling tickets for the same time for $1,463. It pays to shop.
I've been to Moscow on different occasions, but I much prefer St.Petersburg. If you might have any more questions please feel free to ask. Hope your adventue starts soon.

95Ford,

I'm sorry. I told you that you could check my post in Business Idea's & Solutions. That was wrong. I posted the information on Andrey Rasshivaev in the Jobs & Lessons section.
