During my recent trip to Norway I learned that the Opera web browser has over a 10% market share in Russia while the Norwegian based company has only about a 1% market share worldwide. I've been primarily using Opera for the past year because of its superior security, but also because of features like tabbed browsing and "zoom," which is a quick and easy way to increase the size of the print. I would be interested to know how many others who post here use the Opera browser, especially those of you living in Russia, and what your reasons are for using Opera instead of Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I read somewhere as well that the world-wide usage of Opera browser is about 1%.
Some Java scripts that work just fine in all other browsers will not work properly in Opera browser.

Since IE7 browser now has the tabs and better security I kind of suspicious that some will switch to IE browsers even more. But that's just a guess.

I just started using Firefox, and it is leaps and bounds better than IE.

I agree with you that Firefox "is leaps and bounds better than IE," but I prefer the Opera browser because it is faster and more secure.

If you aren't familiar with the Opera browser you can always go to www.opera.com and download the latest version of their browser for free. Cool

I'm still curious to know why Opera has such a large market share in Russia. If anyone has any insight into this I would appreciate it if they could post heir comments here.

I just came across the following comment about Opera's market share in Russia that was from a blog entry made last month:

http://my.opera.com/chooseopera/blog/2007/11/15/to-russia-with-opera

Quote:
Russia is one of Opera's strongest markets. Depending on the day, Opera usually has between 12% and 15% marketshare, making us the most popular alternative browser (w00t!). Knowing that, we decided an expedition was in order to find out more about the place on Earth where Opera reigns supreme.

Maybe because it comes from a country other than the U.S.? I see people using thumb drives on Moscow Post Office computers. Opera is known for having a smaller footprint than some other browsers and would leave more space on the thumb drive for additional programs.

Yes I do, despite e.g. livejournal editor on Opera works only in text mode ( = user markup html-like tags manually ). Reasons - IE tends to hangup randomly without any reason on some sites I use ( = you need to kill all open IE windows and open them again ).

On opera vs ie - probably because internet is still not so popular to be in each and every house in Russia - it rather used by people related to IT or that simply know computer above 'beginner' level, and do care about what programs they use and their features, and about the alternatives to use if default solution does't satisfy them.

if you use IE and if your windows is not a licensed one then your PC will be in a mess. IE and windows media player are least used in developers world also in open source community. if you use really want to use IE then use version IE6. I use Firefox since its inception and till day its really good. i don't see any nagging ads and animations in my browser window and i can download any flash content from the web. mainly the tabbed version of IE is taken from Firefox which really started this method. some of the scripts i used in my web page works good in Firefox and not 100% compatible in IE. also Firefox is good in terms of security. every time when you close it there is an option it will clear all the cookies, stored entries, passwords and history which is a must. most of the branded PCs sold are bundled with windows where users are simply forced to have it. i would recommend for a basic home use one can use Firefox/opera for web browsing and real player for music, power DVD or winDVD for DVD watching with Divx codec installed. for DVD burning use Nero. use office 2003 professional or the freely available open office which is really good.

even i use Firefox and to me it has got everything for a expert web surfer. ok! now as you are more inclined to opera, its fine. well! in the mean time your 1st post looks like you are conducting a survey, is it?

IE if installed in any PC will check if the windows license is valid. IE is basically bundled with windows and Russia one of the countries where people don't pay huge sum to own a crappy windows operating system. so probably there are huge % of unlicensed copies in circulation. most of the windows applications will always make permanent contacts with Microsoft to report piracy in the name 'windows genuine advantage' at one point your PC will refuse you to login. now a days open source is well preferred. who want to pay 300$ for a crappy OS which broke down often and supplied to incompatible hardware.

Spasibo gomer, vox16, & 007India for your interesting and insightful replies. Smile

I really didn't know much at all about the Opera browser until a friend in Oslo gave me a demo while I was on vacation in Norway 2 1/2 years ago. It took me almost a year after that before I completely stopped using IE, but I'm really happy I finally did make the switch. Smile

Here's the link to an article I saw about Opera Software this past week in the English edition of the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten:

Opera is also free and claims to have the best security, speed, and performance as well. Personally I use both Firefox and Opera and would be interested to see any independent testing that was done to back up claims being made by both Mozilla and Opera.
