I started by listening to streaming radio over the Internet. Three stations that play only Russian music are

Russkoe Radio (mostly pop and rock) http://www.rusradio.ru/live/default.asp

Russkoe Radio 2 (for people who were born in the USSR, more rock than pop)
http://www.rusradio2.ru/

Golos Rossii (the international voice of Russia plays a variety of types of music at different times of the day and has special programs focusing on a particula genre like avtorskiye pesni) http://www.vor.ru/

Then I found http://www.allofmp3.com where it is easy and cheap to buy high-quality MP3s of Russian music. I bought some Bi-2, Nochniye Snayperi, Smyslovie Galyutsinatsii, Piknik, Mashina Vremeni. Then I would listen to songs on the radio, search for a line from the chorus at http://www.rambler.ru to find the lyrics and identify the artist, then I would go to allofmp3 and buy the album.

Also, http://www.krylia.ru is a rock concert in Moscow this month. Check the list of artists. It has links to the artist websites where you can find out more about there music.

And listening to Russian songs is a great motivation for improving your Russian. When reading a book it gets to be a chore looking up stuff in the dictionary but somehow it is more fun trying to puzzle out the meaning of the poetic lyrics in a song.

Just copy and paste names of songs in russian to a russian search engine (i.e. www.rambler.ru or www.yandex.ru ), and i'm sure you'll easily find the lyrics.
If this doesnt help, you can type the songs names here and i'll find the lyrics for you. Or better send it in a PM..

Webmaster.

Until now nobody has mentioned Kolovrat...I would like to know what kind of music do they play?

Why kolovrat is never mentioned among the russian rock bands?...Is it true that they sing about white or russian supremacy and hatry to other races?

Thanks in advance

My girlfriend likes a band called Agata Kristi - there's another called Akvarium which is considered 'Russian classic rock' from the 80's/early 90's. Aria is worth a listen. Zemfira is also very good.

Diskoteka Avaria is kind of like the Beastie Boys...

Leningrad is good - can't think of a comparison... it's Ska with edgy lyrics.

If you like electronic pop, Delfin is one of my favorites. There is a lot of pop - Blestyashe, Via Gra, Fabrika, Gosti Iz Buduschevo, Hi-Fi, Propaganda, Reflex, Glyukoza, Linda... too many to name. It's an acquired taste. Many new bands come from Fabrika Zbesd - Star Factory - a television show that is the Russian equivalent of star search.

If you want to pay cash and get high quality stuff, go to mp3search.ru - they also have great deals on stuff you know - much better than Napster. If you want to download random free stuff, try rmp.ru.

Ok - this was one of the most popular songs of '03 - WWW by Leningrad. The lyrics are very funny...it's about a homeless guy with a web site. The cops stop him and demand that he tell them where he lives - he responds by giving them his web address.

hey guys....haven't posted in a while..nice to see e1 is still here.

I like Zemfira a lot too. Do you think she will ever tour Canada?..proly not. Also Mumiy Troll is good....they've been around for a while although i only recently heard them.

As for Pop...i don't like it....especially Glukoza..her voice makes me sick.....and Via-Gra is only good too watch while muted Laughing

I honestly sometimes confuse Blestayasche and Via Gra. It's surprising how many Spice Girls - style bands are in Russia. Propaganda is probably the funniest, because it has one good singer and two hotties that are just there because some marketing maven decided that the band would sell better with hotties.

That's cause when you look up a countries music from another country you will find what is most popular right?...which is POP...and pop is crap everywhere...at least me and you don't like it..you proly more than me.
So I'd have to try out the scene before saying it sucks.
You should try Zemfira...she has some good remixes with Rammstein too.

I dont like pop too.
You may chek out 'DDT' - old band from 80-90-th - they're still playing good inspired rock (later disks are better IMHO). Very good texts and music. Quite a Russian style.
Also 'Chaif' is good enough.
I also like 'Russian album' by 'Akvarium'

If you cant understand something it doesn't mean its bad.
I dont like most of what is called 'russian music' too. But all this in fact shouldn't be called 'Russian' nor 'music'. It's just commercial crap.
