Hello everybody,

I've been living in Ulan-Ude for almost two weeks now. I arrived in Irkutsk and got my visa registered in Ulan-Ude. My girlfriend (Sveta, Russian) and I are living with her parents and on friday we will get married. My intention is to stay with her for another 5 months until she has finished her studies. Then we will go back to Belgium together, somewhere in the beginning of July. But I am in trouble with my visa, I have a private visa (chastnaya) valid for 30 days only. Sveta went to OVIR in Irkutsk before I arrived and the woman said there very specifically that if I have a private visa, it can be prolonged for one year maximum. So we go to OVIR in Ulan-Ude, but the womand there (who is a real bitch by the way), says that a foreigner is only able to stay in Russia for a maximum period of 90 days and if she allows it.

But how's this we asked her, we are getting married! She doesn't want to talk to us until we show her our marriage application form, which is at ZAGS of course.

But how's that? I am soon Sveta's husband and I will not be able to stay with my wife? That can not be right, can it? Is there no way for me to prolong my stay in Russia itself? Maybe in Moscow somewhere? Or will I really be forced to go to Mongolia and apply for a new visa there? Can't I get some kind of temporary residenct? Help and advice is very welcome 'cause we're a bit at loss.

You can reply to this, but it's better to e-mail to chas3r@hotmail.com , my address in Russia.

Many greetings!

Michael Smith

P.S.: If there are any Europeans or other foreigners hanging around in Irkutsk or Ulan-Ude, let me know, we'll go out for a drink!

Hi Michael,

I'm very sorry to hear about your troubles, almost all Russian officials are real bitches, and they don't know what they're doing most of the time, anyway.

It is true that you can stay 90 days maximum with a private visa. If you have it for 30 days only, then it is 30 days, unless somebody in OVIR will prolong it. Unfortunately, in this situation it all depends on this woman.

You can't stay one year with a private visa, as far as I know, at least I think I saw it in the new law (#115 FZ, signed 26 July 2002).

Perhaps, the easiest way for you would be to go to Mongolia (if you're American, you don't need a visa, if you're European -- you can get it fast, just pay $25 US -- check with the Mongolian consulate in Irkutsk). There you can apply for another visa (a tourist one, for example, cause it will be the fastest), and come to Russia again.

Also, you may try to talk this woman into making an extention for you. I think you should tell ZAGS about your problem, and ask them to make a kind of an official paper saying you'll marry soon, and then bring this paper and a box of chocolate to this woman in OVIR, and try to talk to her nicely (I know, she's a bitch, but here in Russia we have to do this kind of things often), and ask her to extend your visa. In any case, your bottom line is to leave to Mongolia and make a new visa, so anyway, you will be able to stay with your future wife.

I hope it helps...
