I understand Trains 4 and 6 are international trains which cannot be used for trips within Russia ie. Moscow to Irkutsk

Can they be used for the leg from Irkutsk to Ulan Bataar and what would the price be?

I think the main problems with these trains would be that it's hard to book it from Irkutsk. However, there are other trains, because people who live in that part of Siberia travel to China quite often. So, you have two options: you can either buy both tickets (Moscow - Irkutsk and Irkutsk - Ulan-Bataar) in Moscow, or you can take your chances and try to buy a ticket Irkutsk - Ulan-Bataar in Irkutsk. There's an international ticket office in Irkutsk, so I'm sure you will be able to buy it there, it is just that you might need to wait for a few days before departure, so I would recommend to buy the ticket directly when you arrive and then go traveling at Baikal for 7-10 days before your train to Ulan-Bataar.
