Hi,

I would like to know what is a typical school year in a russian university?

When does school start (early november probably?)
What are the holidays during the year, and how long ? (Here we have 2 weeks of holiday for Christmas, 1 more in spring and another 1 in automn)
When does the university year ends ?

Thanks a lot, it would help me greatly !

Russian school always starts on September 1st. It's a big day all over Russia when all children start their first day of school. It's almost like an informal holiday in the country. School normally ends at the end of May. There is a vacation period around New Year's. I think also 2 other periods in the fall and spring for 1 week when kids don't study, but I am not 100% sure about that.

Some schools have summer classes.

Thats pretty much the same as over here then. But is it like that at the university level? Our kids also get some days off for what we call professional development days. Theres a fairly long break in the spring and also after Grad in the summer. Summer break is the longest break they get here. I think they get about a week at Christmas/ New Year as well.

Classes in a typical university usually start in the beginning of September and end some time in May. So it's similar. Each year, students have 2 semesters - Fall and Spring. There are final and mid-term exams.

Unlike high schools it’s more common for universities in Russia to start fall semester early October. A lot of times university students engage in the old Soviet tradition of helping harvest potatoes during the month of September (for free) this tradition is still alive these days. Usually it’s a great time to bond with your fellow students. Dancing Fall semester exams start around 20th-25th of December and continue through mid January (excluding New Years and Orthodox X-mas), than there’s “winter brake”. Spring semester starts after first week of February and ends in late May, exams may take up the whole month of June. During Summer time most universities organize “practical training” courses that last about a month and are mandatory to attend. So, there you go, no fall break, no spring break. Shame on you Brick wall
