I have read that gift giving in Russia is very important and highly significant. And I read that New Year's is one of if not the biggest gift-giving holidays. Please clue me in. Let's say it's a 25-year-old woman. She makes decent money, she is single, and has no boyfriend, but has friends. Who might she give gifts to, how much might she spend and what type of gift might she give? Thanks.

It’s a very broad question and the answer largely depends on person’s character, rather that age/income.
As for New Years gift giving tradition in Russia, think of it as X-mas giving in the U.S., it isn’t much different.

PhillipFromTexas,

I wonder where in earth you are getting these ideas about New Years. Wink

RW will give modest things. For friends that she will visit, often it will be champaign or cakes (or in general drinks and eats). For closer people it will be things like perfumes, colognes, CDs, DVDs, Picture frames, small glass sets, bath sets. Just think of things that we would see as very good stocking stuffers.
