A hotel can't do it for you, you & the person named on the private invitation have to go to Ovir (and I believe this has changed!, it may be now the ministry of the interior) and register it together. And pay.

Yes, you have to go with the person who invited you to the local OVIR office. You also have to pay a registration fees which is one ruble for each day. You the fees in the bank, get the receipt back to the office and then they register the visa and put a stamp on the immigration card.

A hotel will do it for you only if you pay for it and stay there the whole period you need a registration for. So yes in your case going to OVIR is easier. If you're in Moscow, you have to go to DEZ actually, then to the bank, then to police. More info about that on http://waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Registration.html
