I just read in a tourism guide book that you can't bring rubles in to Russia. I was planning on exchanging money at LAX before I left the us. Is this one of the rules you disregard or is this a legitimate rule that you have to abide by?

Thanks

I've never been aware of anything official and have brought back what I have taken out. Sometimes a few hundred, sometimes a few thousand. you get f all for them @ home anyway and it's handy to have some straight up if you go back.

In your case I would just get some out of the ATM when you land. It will more likely than not be a better exchange rate than buying them in the US..

The law is you can't take them out as "officially" they are not a hard currency per se. I even found it difficult to buy them outside from banks and currency converters here in Oz so I did what Nikir has done and took back what I brought out. My wife even took out 16000 and took them back in. Not an eyebrow raised, and since it's less than 3000.00 US (? is this still current) you don't declare a kopeck.

And an ATM is a handy friend! My bank's (which bank?) Cirrus/Maestro cards I've never had a problem using in ATM's in Russia. Just look for the Cirrus/Maestro logo.
