Why do so many Russian women shun contraception?
And then abort babies, or if they give birth , they leave them to state institutions? Is it so hard to use protection? Are condoms expensive and isn't life more important? What about Russian men?

I can't believe such things can happen in a country proud of its education and culture. |

First of all, Russia is a huge and very diverse country. Many if not most people are neither educated not cultural. The culture/science/etc is concetrated in large cities, for the most part. There may be many explanations about this troubling trend. Maybe because sex education was non-existent in the Soviet times - sex was not discussed in public or in the media, and some of that lack of educatiuon is still showing. Condoms and other contraceptives are now widely available and are not that expensive. And due to the increase in the AIDS cases being reported, more and more people (those who are smart) use them.
Overall, the country is still relatively poor. So some people don't want to spend money on contraceptives in spite of the risk.
In adition, many people in Russia don't have access to good medical care. It's often the doctor in a country like UK who would suggest his/her patients to use contraceptives. In the USA, oral contraceptives, for the most part, have to be prescribed by a doctor. |

That's quite an important consideration for many people. contraceptive measures cost while abortions don't.
Besides "if it was good enough for my mother it's good enough for me" is still the benchmark for a lot of women. |

Таких новояз у Вас в Америке всё таки нет! У Вас только ваш прелестный президент с миллионами беремнными подростками! Ура ! Я тоже хочу стать американской беременной подростке! This is a stupid response and you know nothing about America, Americans, and our pregnancy and abortion problems here. Women in the US do have the option of abortions here...they are legal. There are a lot of issues surrounding abortions and they have been around long before Bush ever became the President. |

No,
"because they are too intellectual and intelligent for that. And there is way too much culture there. It's a perfect society(' ')"
is the stupid response in this thread.
It is in fact probably the most tactless and offensive response you have ever posted in the time you have been a member of this forum. |

I put the smiley so that this would be taken as a sarcastic and not a serious tone or intention. Just trying to keep things lite and humorous |

American women have abortions but they are not repeated abortions over and over because we don't use that as a form of birth control.....babies are precious and we don't believe in taking human life for our own pleasure as a way out....over and over....since knowing that women in Russian use this method like a roll of paper towels in the kitchen, I would like to know the cost of abortion in Russia over a cost of a box of condoms...What is the cost for a box of condoms in the entire country of Russia?
I would like to know how a Russian woman would feel after 6 abortions and finally meeting the man of her dreams and cannot get pregnant when she finally decides to have a baby with her husband...that could happen after so many abortions...I like to know what her feelings are when the doctor says sorry you ruined your body and now you can't have a child.... |

Scroll up and you'll find the answer to that.
Jo Jo you are way too emotional about a situation that is the norm there.
A whole lot of things have to get better before prospective parents feel secure enough to bring more children into the world. These include the ability for the parents themselves to have the means to provide, ongoing heath care and adequate housing. At the present time it is just not realistic.
Therefore the status quo prevails. Fact of life.
You really should stop judging the rest of the world by your own fairly limited standards because you are quite ignorant of what goes on out there.
Go and see a few countries and then come back with an objective point of view. |

Oh, really? How come your super country then has so many teenage mothers ? Here we don't have so many teenage mothers, maybe it is, because I am not living in a Super Power Country... |

| Gen. P...America has so many teenage pregnancies? Do we? In my High School there was only one that I knew of. Hasn't been any in my family...and in my circle of friends I don't know of any. I hear about it on the news I guess but frankly I don't see it as being a noticeable issue. We are a large and diverse country and perhaps there are many reasons. Just saw the movie The Italian...I wonder if his mother was a teenager. Also the legal age for an adult is 18. So if an 18 or 19 year old gets pregnant...she still is a teenager. And even if she is married still it's a teen pregnancy. But yes abortions are legal in the US and they happen all the time. They should not be a accepted form of birth control as you are implying. And they do cost more than contraceptives |

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics...
Teenage pregnancy, regardless of the figures, teenage pregnancy will always be a problem so long as human nature is here to stay.
Abortions will not be an option for many because of it's great emotional cost and maybe laws in place, contraceptives are not 100% foolproof, women can get raped, some people may just be uneducated, or just not in any condition to use contraceptives...
I think it is more important that no matter how a child was brought into the world, he/she and his/her mother should have the means and support to live a decent life. I think it all boils down to education, but how much can that really educate a person?
However...
Here (Singapore) abortions cost less than $5. That is how cheap life is. Yes, people are educated, people use contraceptives, but teens are getting themselves pregnant and being in a conservative society they rather keep these things to themselves and not tell their parents. Who knows how many teenage mothers there are, and whether there will be more if abortions were not so cheap and discreet...
I have nothing to say of people who abort babies simply because they do not want children to hinder their career or lifestyle... it is not that they are uneducated. They are probably the most educated ones. |
