In July this year I'm travelling to St Petersburg, and am currently applying for my visa to Russia from Australia. I got the letter of invite using the method listed on this site (where it says that they make a reservation at a hotel, but you don't actually have to stay there), but now the company that is delivering my visa application documents to the embassy tells me that I need accomodation details, otherwise my application will be rejected.

I thought I didn't need accomodation details, because the invitation was sufficient? Also, I'm concerned that if there is a hotel listed on my invite, if I list somewhere else as the place I'm staying, that my application will be rejected on the basis that my documents don't match?

Any advice you could give would be great Smile

Just put the same details that are on your invitation onto the application for a visa. That' what Ive always done and never had a problem.

You can do the whole thing yourself. Download the form from the embassy site fill it in and post with the correct fee and a reply paid envelope. If you are in Sydney or Canberra you can take it in yourself.

Actually, I just compared the voucher I've received to an example of a tourist voucher on this website - it doesn't look like they've even listed a hotel for me. One one side of the invitation, the invitation looks like it's there fine, but on the other side (which I assume should be the tourist voucher), they only list:
-My name (and no Russian version, only in english)
-Citizenship
-Sex
-Purpose of Visit
-Duration of Stay
-Itinerary
-Services
-Payment

I'm starting to get a bit worried, I don't think this is what a normal tourist voucher is like, is it?

and to make things more worrying, the following has just been placed on www.smarttraveller.gov.au:

Quote:
When applying for your visa, please note there is a distinction between tourist and visitor visas. A tourist visa is intended for those staying in hotel-type accommodation. Visitor visas apply to those staying privately. If you intend to stay privately, do not apply for a tourist visa.

I guess this is handled by the supposed hotel reservation, but it is still discomforting.

Edit:

Reading my voucher, "Services" appears to be the hotels. For example, they have listed "COSMOS" for Moscow which is a hotel there.

From what I remember (it's 10 years since I had a tourist visa) there were two papers. One was the invitation and the other one was the voucher.

On the application form you list both the hotel name and the tourist voucher number.

See the application form here http://www.sydneyrussianconsulate.com/Visa_Application_Form.pdf

I think I put the hotel name in question 8. In any case I didn't stay one night there as a friend arranged an apartment for me.

Mat7 that's not new on smarttraveller. It's a standard warning that you will also find on "specialist" Russian tour agency sites like Gateway.

If you heed all the advice on smarttraveller you wouldn't be game to leave home.

I still have the old advice page open in another firefox tab and this bit has definitely just been added. However, I accept your point. Interestingly, one of the hotels listed on my voucher supposedly doesn't exist anymore - according to a friend over there.
