Actually Greg...I just yahoo searched Surfguy and I came up # one on the search page. What we post here definitely shows up...regardless of whether it relates to Russia or not.

Right, but I mean topics. For example, if you searched for something to do with US politics or George Bush, Way to Russia would never come up. But about Russian issues it often does. There was a post here a while ago titled "Anna Politkovskaya Murder". At the time, if you searched for that on Google the post on this forum was on the first page which was quite remarkable considering that story was covered extensively by all major online news sources. That doesn't always happen, of course (the riots in Tallinn post isn't anywhere near the top). But it does only happen with Russia-related topics. I imagine your nick is somewhat unique so I wouldn't expect it to be all over the place.

but did I read you right that you are an Aussie? Living in Moscow?Cool what a great experience.

Yes, I was. But I'm back in Australia at the moment and moving to Beijing in a few weeks. I get nostalgic for Moscow sometimes but there are so many places to experience and so little time...

I did not know I am supposed to do anything. Do I have a new job? I was not aware of that.

I contribute in other ways here plus I am a woman and us women usually don't know all this stuff.

What a sexist and ridiculous statement. Are there any feminists in Kentucky? Well, I have met many extremely smart, curious and inquisitve women in my personal and professional life that would really hate to be categorized or implied as being inferior "women usually don't know this stuff"

Most importanly, what stuff? For example, I posted a New York Times artilce that talked about a new law in Rusia that will force radio stations there to devote at least 50% of their broadcast time to positive news. Do you need to know much about politics to understand that article? No. Do you need to be an expert in Russia to understand this article? No. Your answer was: "well, I don't know much about politics, so explain" You're just looking for an excuse for your intellectual laziness.

You people in this forum (Russians) are suppose to tell me what is going on in your part of your world or wherever you live now.
I am not supposed to do anything. My part of the world is the United States where I live. Most on this forum are foreigners or those who immigrated from Russia (like me or vitalsigns). I think if you are really interested in Russia, you can certainly contribute in many ways or ask questions beyond the simple "who/where" in relation to buses, trains, etc.

I care about Russia alot Spicey, as a matter of fact, I am still considering going to Russia in the fall spite all the negative responses I received about it.
What negative responses? Most nagtive responses were related to the life in Russia, and the life of ordinary Russians. That has nothing to do with tourism. If you stick to the centers of large cities, your main concern would be the cost, since Moscow, for example, is a very expensive city. Otherwise, you will not see or feel the 99% of the problems. What do you care about the freedom of speech there, or Putin's desire for power? It will not affect the food you eat in a restaurant or anything else. For example, Mexico as a country has many problems, but if you go to Mexico as a tourist (as I did 6 times), you will have a great time, experience great service and would want to come back again. Tourism has nothing to do with what we're discussing.

I wasn't telling you to make it your job to inform me about Russia. I came to the source which is you and a few others in here. It's nice to get news and information from Russians. Yeah, I do care about Russia and I am going there to learn the culture and meet people. I am not just going there to eat in restaurants or clubbing, I am going because I am curious about the people. I think you don't really understand what I am saying.

Spicey, There are feminist and non-feminist here in KY. The women really don't talk much about the politics, some of us do, but I mostly talk about problems in our community or state on subjects like health, children, school, ect., but I wish I wasn't getting all these backlashes for not being educated on politics here. I am curious to know what is going on outside of my own country and I might be ignorant sometimes on international issues, but I am smart and curious as other people. I spent some years being more educated on other issues and did not focus on what was going on outside of America. This was the main reason I came to WTR is to learn about Russia and not be thought of as intellectually lazy on Russia.

Jo Jo I really hope that you take those two above posts in the spirit that they were intended.

Your shift from I'm going there in the fall, to I'm still considering gong there in the fall is quite blatantly contradictary.

Not sure what negative feedback you are referring to, most people here that know a little about the place have gone to some length to give you realistic feedback on every issue that you brought up.

Maybe your expectations are a bit unrealistic, but if you are curious you should go and make up your own mind. As stated on many occasions it is a unique and at times ambivalent experience, but speaking personally I have never left Russia without a lump in my throat, a tear in my eye and an overwhelming desire to return. And next February I will,

Nikir, maybe it is contradictary. I changed my mind and wasn't sure about going. I said I was going last year and when I got some negative information this year (not from spicey or you or surfguy), I was thinking of cancelling.

Are you talking about going to Russia for good or vacation? I felt this way when I lived in NY and missed Kentucky. I kinda wished I stayed in NY... Wink

Most people dont even think about Russia in general. I found this site while looking up wrestling. I dont see what harm is being done by luring people to this site on off topics, rather than being a nazi and insisting on keeping with Russian topics. Nobody ever seems to want to keep talking about it, and thats not just me, everyone is easily steered in another direction. I guess you expect people to just sit here and answer questions for free, and once they are done being of use to you, then its time to tell them how little they mean. Well whatever I have yet to see anyone really take the bull by the horns and stick to topic, even the little trolls who complain about topics, they are the same ones who help flame normal topics. Also lets not forget that this forum has enacted a policy of not allowing mail order bride topics, or topics related to being scammed. Those topics generated ALOT of interest, but now they are no longer allowed. (not that I blame anyone for banning them) But the topic was about Russia, and some women claiming to be Russian. So by becoming a topic nazi, you are basically saying you want everyone to work for you but without pay. People will obviously come here to chat with one another, I dont see that changing unless you threaten to ban casual chatters. Rolling Eyes

If you go in the summer and visit Moscow and St Petersburg and book some tours to see the cities and learn more about them, you'll bring back a lot of memories for sure. St Petersburg is called Northern Venice for a reason.

Am i really bad at expressing myself or are people just not listening? Answer questions if you want. Don't answer them if you can't or if you don't like helping people. That's not my point. Trying to convey basic ideas to people on this forum is like having teeth pulled so here's my last attempt - an extended analogy you might be able to understand:

Surguy runs a surf shop. For some reason a bunch of random people with no real knowledge of or interest in surfing have decided to hang out there. They add no value to his shop but occasionally they erupt into bouts of childish bickering or interrupt other people who come to talk about surfing. They irritate Surfguy but at the same time he's happy that they find his shop a nice place to hang out.

However, Surfguy suspects that some professional surfers would hang out in his shop if they weren't put off by the aforementioned random people. The professional surfers would add a lot of value to his shop. He tries to talk to the randoms and suggests that maybe they could try to take an interest in surfing or, at the least, not dominate the entire store so that there is room for others. Instead of making an attempt to understand why Surfguy is saying that, they throw tantrums and whinge. Poor Surfguy...

Chat if you want. But don't pretend you are doing a service to this website when you do. Contribute when you have something worthwhile to say. Otherwise keep the nonsense to appropriate threads. Try to ensure that Russia-related threads are more numerous than the irrelevant ones. That might mean you have to post less nonsense rather than more things about Russia. I'm not singling anyone out - call these general guidelines for everyone.

Appropriate threads? The "not relevant" section was removed. I guess anything not directly mentioning the words "Russia, or Russian", will be considered nonsense?
