If I buy my Trans Mongolian Train tickets from a different source than my travel companion, will there be a problem in sitting and sleeping in the same compartment? In other words, are specific seats reserved or can I just get on the train with my ticket and sit anywhere?

Depending on which class you planning on being in, this will likely be a problem. Most trains do have specific seats or places. I believe all but the cheapest seats. You are probably better off getting them from the same place just to be safe. You also probably will not really know what seat or car your companion will be in until you actually have the tickets in your hand, so it will be hard to request specific seating from two different sources.

Thanks Ashton, though the answer is not the one I had hoped for ! I'm thinking about taking the #3 train from Beijing, second class.

Yes, this will be quite problematic. The only thing that will be possible will be to talk directly to your friend's neighbors in the train and arrange with them to exchange the seats, but it's going to be hard.

You will be traveling together for 6 days and good company is essential (unless you want to meet a lot of new people), so maybe it's worth buying your ticket from the same source.

From the same source AND at the same time. If you buy it at a different time, even if it's the same company, it will be almost impossible for them to get specific places.

But look, if you are going to go on 1 August, it means the tickets are not yet purchased, because the maximum period in advance set by Russian railways when you can purchase a ticket is 45 days. So, it might have not yet been purchased. Even if it WAS purchased it's possible to give it back with a certain discount. Then you can go to another source and buy all the tickets together.

So, I think it can still be OK.
