Do Russians use idioms much? here are a some of my favourite English ones:
The cats whiskers - something very good
The lights are on but nobody's home - someone who is stupid
A face like a bulldog chewing a wasp - someone who is ugly
As mad as a box of frogs - someone who is crazy, but in a good way
so, some Russian idioms with translations would be interesting |

Ни пуха ни пера! = Good luck! (for example in exam) - К чёрту! = response to ni pukha ni pera
Сходить / сойти с ума = go insane
упасть с неба на землю = to fall on the ground from the sky
идти куда глаза глядят = go where your eyes point
- sorry for bad English in translations, it is just not my mother tongue |

What does this idiom mean?
etot chuvak menya visajivaet
A friend wrote me this:
I'm not even sure myself what it means cause it's a rather new one, - but I think it means this dude is freaking me out, makes me fond of him, flabbergasted and amazed by him at the same time... he-he
Anyone know exactly? |

Roughly this mean: this guy tries to convince me or tries to force to believe me in something.
However this idiom is not common for use. |

I think it means: " This " person" makes me wonder" (Этот мужик меня удивляет). |

It means disagreement, and counterexample is expected immediately after it.
e.g.- "ну не скажи - коллекция там намного лучше" |

Как снег на голову (like snow on one's head) - all of a sudden
A new one in youth slang: жесть! (tin as metal) - cool!
Кишка тонка = Руки коротки (gut too narrow = hands too short) not enough power or resources to do something
Он мухи не обидит (He won't harm a fly) - He'll never do any harm to anyone
Как папа Карло (like daddy Carlo) - to work hard, usually not earning much; Carlo comes from the Russian version of Pinoccio book
Гол как сокол (naked like a falcon) - extremely poor
Медвежья услуга (bear's service) - a service that does in fact more harm than good
More to follow! |
