Hi,

Does anybody know whether you can take dogs on the Trans-Siberian? It is not a seeing eye dog or anything like that, but a pet. I am hoping to get from Beijing thru Mongolia and across Russia via train as I move back west, and have always wanted to take the Transiberian, but would need to bring my pup with me! Any news on this would be much appreciated, thanks!

Small dogs travel in cages ( containers ); not allowed in 2-berth compartments and 'comfort coach' (**); veterinary certificate required. Containers are placed in standart luggage location.
Big dogs are allowed to travel in separate 4-berth compartment, paying for all 4 berths. Again, not allowed at all in 'comfort coach' and 2-berth.

Transporting animals

Transporting animals to countries in Europe

Small pets (cats, birds) can be taken as hand luggage if they are in suitable cages.

Dogs can only be taken in direct through coaches.

Dogs can be taken in 1st and 2nd class coaches, but not more than 2 dogs per compartment, whereby the passenger must pay the cost of the tickets and berth ticket according to the number of places in the compartment and a supplementary fare for transporting dogs equivalent to 50% of the full ticket for a journey in a 2nd class coach.

Dogs may not be transported to or taken on transit through Norway, Sweden, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Slovenia.

Aggressive dog breeds may not be transported to or taken on transit through Germany.

Transporting animals to China, Mongolia, North Korea and Vietnam

Passengers may take small pets if not against veterinary rules. Animals may be taken as hand luggage (cats, birds) with a weight of up to 20 kilograms per item.

Dogs may travel for a supplementary payment. Transporting dogs is allowed only in 2nd class coaches, with no more than 2 dogs per compartment. The passenger must pay the cost of the tickets and berth ticket according to the number of places in the compartment, as well as an additional fare for transporting dogs amounting to 50% of the full ticket for the journey in a 2nd class coach.

If the railway company is unable to provide a separate compartment for the transportation of dogs, such transportation is not permitted.

Transporting animals to Finland

Only dogs and cats may travel. Transporting dogs and cats must be approved by the Finnish veterinary and customs regulations.

Transporting dogs is allowed in 1st and 2nd class coaches, but more than 1 dog per passenger is not allowed. Passengers must pay the cost of the tickets and berth tickets according to the number of places in the compartment.

If all paid places are occupied, passengers must pay an additional charge for transporting dogs amounting to 50% of a full 2nd class ticket. An additional receipt is issued. If, however, one of the paid places in the compartment is not occupied, no additional charge for a dog is made.

Hi

Has anyone tried this from China to Russia/Mongolia? I'm trying to get from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar and I want to take my dog... I have found plenty of stories of people sneaking/paying for their dogs to come aboard on the Russian side of the train, but as for China I can't find any definitive information!

Has anyone gotten a dog on (legally or otherwise) the Chinese side of the Trans Siberian?
