|
|
| Will be staying with host family in St. Petersburg Fall Semester and want to bring gifts. Sadly, airlines will no longer allow bottles of liquid (wine or spirits) even if they are well packed in my checked luggage. Coming from Oregon - would local food products such at Tillamook Cheese, Hazelnuts, Stash Tea, or locally roasted coffee beans be good ideas? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. |

| You should NOT bring cheese, meat, or fruit. Because you never know if there is a ban on it. |

Anything that is packed and checked into luggage should be allowed.
But I would suggest to forget about cheese, tea, etc. No one cares about that. If you want to bring a good gift to your russian friends consider the following:
- for ladies, good french cosmetics items - Lancome, Dior, Este Lauder are the brands most Russians know and love
- for men, wool sweaters, scarfs, hats: remember that in the winter, it's cold in St Petersburg and any nice-looking warm clothes would be welcome, especially since really good brand clothes are much more expensive in Russia than in the US
- Jeans/Jeans jackets made by Levis. In the US, Levis has gone downhill as a brand. But in Russia, Levis and Wrangler are well-known and popular
- Nice leather brand wallets for men and women; you can buy them on sale in stores like Macy's. They may be quite expensive in Russia
- Nice belts/ties may be appreciated by some |

| I want to correct myself - I was mainly talking about relatively expensive gifts that are good for friends/family. If you're looking to buy something inexpensive, hats, t-shirts or any other article of clothing that say "Oregon" , "Portland", U.S.A. would probably be a good bet. |

Since I am going to Russia, do you think a T-shirt that says, "Getting Lucky in Kentucky" would be a good gift?.... |

How about native american art?
I gave a dream catcher.
I personally do not like giving anything nationalistic, but cultural instead.
Smoke Pacific salmon . Peanut snacks like big bags of Reese Pieces. Local sport club gear like Hockey Jerseys and Soccer jerseys.
You want something unique so they can brag about it, but nothing nationalistic. |

I don't think it would be a good gift. Who is this gift for?
You'd do better with something that has Levis or other famous brand name on it. Most people won't know what Kentucky is. |

Yeah one of the more memorable remarks I received while wearing it was: "Im a kid, can I have some of your Trix". This of course was said to me by some teenage brat. |
