| Well for a few dollars more you can stay at the SAS Radisson or the Grand European... Plus I know of one more...it is good...the Corinthia...it is nice and I have been there too...all of these are 5 star...so nothing but the best for you! |

Don't look for a "free lunch" in the center of St Petersburg. You won't get secure, clean, comfortable and decent accommodation for little money.
They hotel I suggested charges around 130 EURO /night for 1 room. If you go with a friend, I think you can afford 65 EUROs per night to be safe and comfortable. After all, you're not going to Russia every day... |
I most certainly wouldn't say hostels to be insecure! Not luxury of course, but still not that bad. I have never heard from anyone getting robbed at the hostel. I've seen plenty of travelers carrying their lap tops with them at hostels. Ok, I've seen some real paranoia over nothing when young people are on their first trip and mamma is not cooking for them, but still most people are quite fine at hostels. |

| I have decided to give up the Hostel and stick with a hotel. It is in my best interest to stay in a hotel and not with others in a Hostel. I think that would be fun but a few people think I am nuts for suggesting a Hostel. |

Damn,
Hostels. A mixed bag if ever there was one. Security in most were a joke (this is western europe back in '86) and for the price charged, you get what you pay for. I actually found the better ones were in real off the beaten track places. Mind you after two months of Hostels and the patrons, I was teary eyed with ecstacy to have a room to myself, spotless linen, a real breakfast and a shower that didn't remind me of a slaughterhouse wash room.
B.O.T.
I did a really nice Homestay in St P, in Pushkinskaya just off Nevsky down near the Moscow train train station. It was about US40 per night at the time, probably up around who knows what now!
I'd suggest trying your luck. Take some folding green so you can cop out if things start to suck badly, either to another place to stay or a trip out of there!

I take preference on clean linens, a decent shower and good locks. Wow, what an experience you had. I will take your experience and stay in a nice hotel which I have already decided.
Thanks UsualSuspect. |

UsualSuspect, did I understand you correctly, is your travel experience from year 86? I haven't seen dirty linen in any of the hostels I've stayed. Besides, if you wan't privacy, most hostels have rooms for one or to persons, some have also double. Price range of these rooms is usually from 20 euros till 45 per night. I would count on the information in the hostelworld, I've never been disappointed. What comes to breakfast, it is true that not all hostels offer any breakfast at all, but what comes to hostel breakfasts, that I enjoyed in Poland during the June of YEAR 2007 I've nothing to complain about. Only place where the breakfast wasn't included was in Budapest, but it didn't really bother. After shower and dressing up for the city we just went to the cafeteria next door. In fact good way to try something different for each breakfast |

GenP,
You are correct, I did the western europe tour back in 1986. You were required to have your own "sleeping sheet", sort of a sack that you put on the bed. Despite washing it went grey!
Re the privacy, if you can afford it, great. Sustaining that level of comfort wasn't an option at the time.
And granted, things have changed since those days and there are probably more and better hostels available now. Once again, it is still a lucky dip. What if your companion snores like a chainsaw?? Or rolls up blind drunk? Or you get to a place and dorm only accommodation is available? Probably easier to avoid nowadays.
Also, 45 Euro's is almost $70 AUS...I have gotten non-hostel accommodation for that!
Given my age now, frankly I'll only rough it if I have to or it is my choice to do so. You are only young 'n' crazy once and I am well past that
Actually I take that back...nothing like Seoul Airport lounge seats for an 8 hour kip!!
Regards

| I am a firm believer in roughing it, just pack a sleeping bag and be on your way. Beef jerky is also a Godsend under such circumstances. A hostel is for lightweights who are afraid of their own shadows, tough guys like me, sleep in the park, under the stars. I have also met many interesting people who I otherwise would have never run into, while sleeping in these parks. |
