I am an international business student in the US. I currently have a project due and have chosen to study the cultural aspects of business in Russia. I have many questions - like what is considered standard business attire, any particular formalities in a business meeting, appropriate proximity of personal space, gift giving, eye contact, hierarchy etc. Anything taboo in Russia that may be considered normal in other European countries. How are Americans perceived? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Have a look at theis website, it's very comprehensive and should keep you busy for quite some time:

Depth research from the Library of Congress.

There is almost no "transparancy" in Russian business, few public disclosure rules, and a mere fledgling stock market that would prompt openness in business transactions. Your are asking some questions that are not easily answered.

Watch these websites for current Russian news, a great deal of it business and politics. Social reporting on Russian culture is very hard to come by.

There is a book, "Russian negotiating behavior". I had it but someone borrowed it and never returned...

It deals with Russian business culture--especially those of the Soviet era. (Which many still are stuck.)

Search for it on amazon.com.

Some potential business associates want to know your astrological sign.

Please, never whistle on their territory. And never say you don't drink.

I know you're not supposed to whistle in a Russian's home. Does that also apply to their place of business?

Yes. If you whistle too much, your business partners may think you're weird.

Actually, I had been told that the superstition was against whistling indoors in general, that it was bad luck or whatever. So, yes, I would think whistling would not be the thing to do. Of course, this one always made me wonder if it was a faux pas to whistle in a car (is it indoors or out?). I suspect if they heard my singing voice, I'd get some sort of special dispensation anyway!

The only other quirky little thing I can think of which might apply to a business meeting would be the superstition against greeting or, especially, saying your farewells (shaking hands, etc.) through the doorway. I think that's also considered a no-no.
