No, I do not think Russia and Georgia will engage in a conflict. They are just having a childish spat.

I am curious to know some of our Russian users opinions on the souring of Russian-Georgian relations. Do you think Georgia is just being childish or do you believe that Russia is interfering with Georgia's aspirations for European integration on purpose, for fear of losing influence over the former Soviet republics?

I believe it's both sides' fault. On one side, Russia is playing a wrong (in my opinion) game in Abkhasia + South Ossetia. On the other, because Georgia is a realtively small country, it has a sertain inferiority complex... kind of like short people being aggressive, or how it's the smallest dogs, chihahuas, that are biting the most mail-carriers here in BC. Laughing When you are small, you gotta prove that you are big... That means picking fights with big people/countries.

There are very strong feelings that Georgians have against Russians..most of them not good. Russia supported Abkhazia and South Ossetia separatists movements within Georgia thus leading Abkhazs to ethnically cleanse Georgians (250,000) from Abkhazia with the help of Chechens in the early 90s. The Ossetians were forced to move into Russia. It's a mess and I don't see any peaceful dialogue between Russia and Georgia until some disagreements are settled.

Oh dear, that's awful. I knew of the war in Abkhazia but I had no idea that there was an ethnic cleansing. Were those responsible brought to justice or is it still unsettled?

Don't exzaggerate. There was no ethnic cleansing. A lot of Georgians did leave the area because of the war. They are refugees. There are refugees in any war. Don't call it enthinc cleansing, please. Sheesh!

Although yes, this was the first, and the only, conflict, that Russian soldiers nad Chechen fighters participated in together, on the same side.

As far as I know it's still unsettled. The goal of the Chechens was to unite the smaller countries of the former USSR regardless of religion, but to unite the Causcasians as one huge group. It's very complex subject with everyone's hands involved in the pot. Brick wall

They are still fighting in the Balkans..when I was there last month (Macedonia) ethnic Albanians were forcing some Macedonians who were refusing to leave Tetovo (majority Albanian city in Macedonia) out of the city. It was in their newspapers...crazy. Also, ethnic Albanians were marching in the streets trying to release from jail two Albanians who were guilty of killing a Macedonian. My friend Sasha's (Serb) sister who is a nun in Kosovo was just hit by an Albanian sniper. It's crazy...but true.

God that's awful! Confused I hope your friend's sister is ok...

I thought the Balkan's had gotten itself in order. Guess I was wrong!

Zach,

Sasha's sister is doing fine..a sniper hit her when she was gardening inside the monastery grounds. Apparentely she was hit in the shoulder but didn't cause too much damage. However, it just shows you that they don't care if you are a nun or a monk..these Muslim Albanians will shot you in a heartbeat.

Here is a group of Muslim Albanians destroying an Orthodox Church.

I visited Georgia a couple of years ago and I really liked the country...very beautiful as is Tblisi. Thing is the ethnic regions being fought over I think are mostly muslim...Which russia was using this to thier advantage to seperate those areas. Anyways...Georgia will never fall under Russia again...

I agree with you about that Georgia will never fall under Russian power. The Georgians have a different way of living and looking at life than Russians, therefore, I don't think they will fall under Russian ideology again.

Well, friend, you are going to do better then Wiki... No offence, but opposittion groups in Vancouver just found that our mayor's staff deleted offencive, yet true statements about him form his Wiki page, and put flattering info in instead... so, as far as I am concerned, Wikipedia isn't exactly a totally neutral and truthful way of obtaining information.

well when you are debating opinions versus facts...yes the info on Wikipedia might not be so reliable. Georgia is a Christian Country that muslims have been trying to get a foot hold on for centuries.
