Hi
We are interested in doing some hiking/trekking in Russia, probably in places near the trans-siberian railroad, this summer. We like mountains, forests, wilderness, that sort of thing, and are wondering where the best places to go would be, for an expedition of perhaps several days duration.
Is it possible to do such things independently, or is it best to find some kind of guide?

Baikal is the best. It's wild, and you can do anything you want there (of course, being respectful to the nature and people). It's a great place. We camped there for 1 month Summer 2002 and it was truly amazing.

We'll soon put a guide to Baikal with photos, so you won't need any guide to hire, the information we're going to have will be enough to travel there.

However, if you want special activities, like rafting, hiking, or getting to remote places, or seeing ethnographic sights, it's better to book a tour. It's not too expensive, and is a great experience too.

Cheers
