Hi..there is a russian boy I know and he is about 23-24 years old and he carries a silver plain ring on his left hand(plain so it looks like a marriage ring) ....

I asked him if he is married ..he replied "no" and he claimed to live with his parents..

I am a bit embrassed to ask him..but I wonder what this ring means "engagement or a promise to marry with someone?or something other than that...

do russians have special rings to wear on certain ocassions?

Russians wear wedding rings on their right hand. Although it is becoming more fashionable lately for men to buy women engagements rings, as is common in the West, many still stick with buying a simple gold wedding band for both the man and woman. Long engagements are not common either. With those things being said, it would be highly unlikely that his ring is symbolic of anything, and that he wears it for style rather than for any other reason.

Most countries wear the wedding band on the left hand, but I thought it was interesting when I heard Russians wore theirs on the right. Is their a reason for the difference? Most Russians are christian orthodox, I was curious that they wore it on the right instead of the usual left.

Not too sure, but most of the Russians I have met have been married within 3 or 4 months of when they determined they would marry each other.

It may be changing due to Russians becoming weathier and throwing more lavish weddings, but unlike in the US, where a couple needs to plan and make arrangements for a reception hall sometimes years in advance, Russian weddings don't require that money planning. I don't think anyone there would pay to book a hall years in advance...who knows what the heck with happen in that time and if you could get your money back should something happen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_ring

Wikipedia lists some other countries where the wedding ring is worn on the right hand, although it does not seem to give a reason why (unless i didn't read down enough Smile

I do not believe the engagement ring would be worn on the left hand because as I mentioned, many Russians still have not adopted the idea of an engagement ring, only the wedding ring.

Furthermore, if a Russian does wear an enagement ring, it would be the woman and definitely not the man.

I think it is silly to plan a wedding so far in advance. I think 6 months is good, but honestly most people lately are going to the "Justice of the Peace" to get married and then have a reception instead of a great big wedding. I like small weddings with a few friends and close family. It is funny but alot of Americans go to Las Vegas to get married...I wouldn't, but it would be fun to elope and come home and tell everyone "hey we are married". Wink

A guy at my work did that, or similar to that. He and his fiancee were planning this large wedding and it just spiraled out of control. So they told everyone that they scrapped the original plan and were going to Vegas to get married and celebrate their honeymoon. Anyone who could afford the flight was welcome to meet them there for the ceremony, but those could not afford it attended a cheaper celebration once they returned home. They were really happy with how it worked out, and the money they saved.

People just assume they live together for so many years then common law goes in effect. I don't believe in that. I rather go all the way with it.

I think the reason for the high divorce rate is that so many people marry for the wrong reasons.

Are you sure this ring is completely plain?
May be it is a ring with the following inscription: "спаси и сохрани/spasi i sokhrani". I don't know how does it sound in english.. It is like a short prayer.
Many russian orthodox men carry such rings.
And there's nothing bad if you ask him about that ring openly Wink
