Russians wear wedding rings on their right hand. Although it is becoming more fashionable lately for men to buy women engagements rings, as is common in the West, many still stick with buying a simple gold wedding band for both the man and woman. Long engagements are not common either. With those things being said, it would be highly unlikely that his ring is symbolic of anything, and that he wears it for style rather than for any other reason.

Most countries wear the wedding band on the left hand, but I thought it was interesting when I heard Russians wore theirs on the right. Is their a reason for the difference? Most Russians are christian orthodox, I was curious that they wore it on the right instead of the usual left.

I'm Eastern Orthodox and most Orthodox wear their wedding rings on the right hand...Also, we wear crowns when we get married and normally we save these crowns and some are buried with their crowns too..I've seen Greeks frame their thin crowns in a picture frame too..Different traditions throughout the Orthodox world concerning wedding rings and crowns.

Are you sure this ring is completely plain?
May be it is a ring with the following inscription: "ñïàñè è ñîõðàíè/spasi i sokhrani". I don't know how does it sound in english.. It is like a short prayer.
Many russian orthodox men carry such rings.
And there's nothing bad if you ask him about that ring openly Wink

oh I havent had the opportunity to look very closely to the ring..But the writing may be in the inner part of ring right?is that ring worn on the left hand?

I ask all a pardon as I badly write in English, but I understand all that write you. Now I learn(teach) English and already well I talk, but yet I do not understand grammar.

I from Russia (Saint-Petersburg) i reading your reflections about a wedding ring, I want to answer. We carry a ring on the right hand because we Orthodox Christianity and are christened by the right hand, all that is connected with the right side in our culture and religion is good, spiritual and it is necessary to adhere. If the man or the woman changes in a marriage, at us speak that he or she - have gone on left. The word "right" at us has many values, for example: the certificate on driving is “rights”, that the person under the law can do all that is “rights”, when the person has made something true to him speak that he is “right”, And at us it is a lot of such examples. And engagement at us is and 3 months last only during her carry a silvered ring or do not carry rings in general

I was under the impression that Russian engagements were typically quite long? But from what I read in the above post, they are typically quite short. Which is it? Does anyone know for sure?

Some more addition to answer from Ksenia:
The Russian name for Orthodox is "Pravoslavie" - "Glorify right". And actually Russian meaning of word "right" is very close to the English meaning in all it's variants (access right, right side, correct etc.).
Speaking of church traditions - orthodox also make the christ sign from the right: fingers to the forehead, right shoulder, left sholder, body. (Catolics make it first to the left shoulder).
