The majority of providers in Russia use GSM 900/1800/1900 standard. There are some providers in USA that use 1900 standard (such as T-Mobile). You need to get a telephone that can be used in GSM 1900 and then you will be able to use it both in USA and Russia. Try Motorola, as it is a major US cellphone producer, so I think they will have some solutions.

Look for a tri-band phone that will work in Europe and the UK and the USA. Motorola makes a couple and I have a Sharp GX-20 in the UK. The model numbers of cell-phones often change slightly from country to country because they put in different ringtones and language choices in the software. So if you can't find a GX-20 in the USA look for a similar model number and check the features. The important thing is that it should be a GSM tri-band phone.

However, if you will regularly be phoning Russia, you might want to buy a phone after you arrive in Russia. That way you will get Cyrillic keys so you can send/receive Cyrillic text messages. Then you will need to use a U.S. operator that supports removeable SIM cards. Just change the SIM when you return home. If all this sounds a bit strange, then do some research on European GSM phones on the Internet.

Rusalka,
Your money, but I have a Nokia 3315 and used it here in Oz ok, and when in Russia I just bought a SIM card and away I went using it over there.
Buying one phone capable of being used anywhere is better than paying for two, IMHO.
