| Just want to know your opinion. This is an on-going debate in Russia and also in Canada. Should firearms be made legal to be carried by ordinary people? |

| I believe...yes...people should have the right to bear arms. Now then...some whackos obviously shouldn't have this right. Criminals do as they wish so it doesn't apply to them...but yes |

Are you talking about only long guns ( rifles, shotguns ) or handguns ( pistols ) or both? Next to a main street near where I stay, there is a very large outdoor billboard that has a picture of a rifle with a scope attached. Who is allowed to buy guns in Russia? Only Military and Militsia or anyone with the money? |

Well you know I am going to say yes, coming from the South. People should have the right to bare arms.
With all the skinhead problems in Russia, I would definately keep a shot gun behind the door in your bedroom. I have 4 here in my house and one of them is a double barrel. I would not hesitate to use it if someone was coming towards me with a gun or threatening my family. Especially women, they should keep a pea shooter under their pillow, buuuut women should take some lessons with a pea shooter because you have to get it in the heart or the forehead to kill a person.
Point and shoot! |

I can't think of a single reason why the average bod should have a firearm. Especially in cities. I can however think of numerous reasons against it.
It must be a very unhappy society where one sleeps with a weapon under ones pillow. |

Women don't think like man. Sometimes it is smart for us to have a gun. I don't particularly want to talk find out if I can finagle myself out of a situation with a 200 pound man coming towards me and no negotiations are available. I cannot protect myself unless I have a gun.
It's not an unhappy society, I just think that it is smart to have protection there if you need it. Women who are alone should consider it. |

The whole country should be exercising that right as we speak.

Traditionally, the U.S. Military has done whatever the commander-in-chief ( U.S. President ) has said do. This business of the Military being ordered to fire on domestic civilians and then refusing to do so and switching sides in favor of the civilians may happen in Europe but ( so far ) does not happen ( that I know of ) in the U.S. I guess if the government wanted to push it, it could say, "Yeah, you can bear arms, but only single-shot smoothbore muzzle loaders". That shouldn't give the government/ Military too much of a problem in putting down domestic insurrection. |

gomer, no, I am not talking about long guns. They (the Duma) want to allow pistols, revolvers, that kind of stuff. As far as long guns... all of Urals and Siberia have those already... lol My father has a "Saiga-12" shotgun with a silencer and a laser sighter:
He goes hunting with it every winter. No one cares if they have permits for that kind of gun, but you can't always carry it with you. Something smaller is what the people want to be able to possess in public, to dfend themselves against hooligans, etcetera. |

well that's exactly back in 1776 the people and the Military all had the same weapons...the musket...so things were even. Now of course the military is far too advanced |

Well, in any case, back to the topic. In Russia, I believe, people NEED guns. I mean in most major cities there are hundreds of armed gangs roaming the streets. Like if you are walking down a dark street at night, and suddenly five young thugs step out of the darkness. You hear the "ching"-like sound of a switchblade behind your back. The leader of the gang says: "You got any money, jewerly, or an expencive watch on ya? Then hand 'em over!". Now if you are unarmed, you have to give up your stuff, or you'll get hurt, or even killed. But what if: you turn around, and pull out a TT, or a Makarov, or even a Beretta. You fire off two shots, and the gangsters disperse. And they will. They are scared of guns.
My answer is a definate "YES". |
