Today, I received a gift from my new friend "Svetlana", this was our first introduction to each other since she is teaching me Russian. Is it customary for Russians to give a gift first when first meeting a new person?

What would be a great gift to give the next time I visit? If I baked a pie or whatever, would this be okay or should I bring something else? She has a baby, would it be okay to bring a gift for her child?

A couple more gift exchanges and you'll turn into lesbians Smile

I am sure a nice pie would be a good gift. But I think it's strange to give people gift unless there's an occasion, like a birthday.

I just give her something that represents you, or the region where you live. You know, like gift-wrapping a crate full of KFC? Just kidding!

Seriously, I am sure she'd appreciate anything that you think is special. However, maybe not one of those AK-47s under your bed! Very Happy

Gift giving to valued persons, on first meeting, seems a more important protocol to Russians than to Westerners. I'm no expert on Russia, but that's my impression.

Притащи с собой бутылочку, охлажденную, что бы потела. Селедку, черный хлеб и луковицу.

Постучи в дверь, улыбнись, и все будет хорошо. Very Happy

Вот тебе первый урок.

I am not in the advance mode, yet. I am starting from the beginning again, thanks to our American version of Russian language books. Those books I bought from Barnes & Noble were not correct.. Sad

Really? In what way?

I hope you take them back for a refund, and lodge a complaint.

The alphabet was wrong and the pronunciation of words and letters were also wrong.

I had a few books. I threw them out.

Jojo, why don't you take a look at one called, "Before you know it" or BYKI. Just Google the BYKI, and it's a free download. I tried it a while ago. It focuses mostly on the spoken language, which is much more useful to you than the written language, ( as a tourist).

Why? I am getting one on one lessons right from the heart of a Russian woman who has not even been in America one year, who is a doctor who right now is home, taking care of a baby and a mother who doesn't speak a word of English and what is better? Svetlana, has time and finds this alot of fun for her and something to do and she is very educated. She knows what she is doing. I rather her teach me. She has all the right books. We are starting right at the beginning. The Russian Alphabet, words, pronunciation ect. She can explain a meaning of a word that I did not understand to a point that made perfectly good sense. She told me the meaning of masculine and feminine which I had totally a different idea of what it mean't. She explained the hard sign and soft sign which again I had the wrong definition of what those mean't. I asked this question before on this forum and not one Russian or person would answer this properly for me. I had to meet a Russian woman in my own state to tell me and teach me what something so simple mean't. Why is that? Sorry BC I am not venting on you. I want to know why these books I bought were not correct. I say that these books I spent my money on needs to be looked at, but by who? I don't understand why books like what I was learning from made it on the self? That should never be.

You will be truly amazed at the difference that revelation will make to your life!

Well done, throwing those useless books away, absolutely the right decision.
