Oh, and as far as that joke, "Slav" = "Slave"... Slavs are nobodys slaves... |
It is not a joke.
"Slav" means "word" in old slavic language but the word "Slave" in english and "Esclave" in french is coming from the latin "slavus" or "sclavus". It is coming from the fact that people from slav origin has been enslaved during the Holy Roman Empire (Charlemagne).

I have heard Moldova has taken the same route, being neither pro West or pro Russia. There are countries that try to walk the line, not falling on one side or the other but I don't know how successful they are at doing so. |

Ukraine will be sooner or later a full member of EU like others slavic countries : Poland, Czech, slovaquia, slovenia, Bulgaria, the next will be Croatia.
I have a lot of contacts with Ukrainians via ICQ or skype from Kiev, ALL of them want Ukraine to be a member of the Europeean family, they are obviously attracted by western Europe, they really don't care about Russia.
By the way, the process already started, I see more and more cars and trucks from Ukraine on french highways, it is a sign.
Last week, one of them asked me his way in a highway gazoline station, he was not English speaking nor French speaking and didn't have even a map of France LOL
Ukrainians doesn't seem to be worried people |

Ok Ruskii sounds like you had a good time in your service and I only brought up the hazing/beating question as there was that video that went around: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hixinV1PYY. The guys in doing the beatings...would have been jailed here and if not...probably would have mysteriously disappeared or been killed in combat. But anyway too I know this is an isolated case and so it is good to get your perspective on your experience.
As for the Ukraine...well there will always be a connection with Russia...and this is why I guess we are discussing this...as from my interaction with the Ukrainians I have met and in fact dated...well they seem to think that the Ukraine will remain pro west...NATO, WTO, EU, etc etc. I think Mister Wizzz is right. But we shall see!

here is an interesting read...stating that the Ukraine is niether pro russia or pro west...I guess sure...why take sides? Why not just be Ukrainian?
Life's just not that simple, James. |
Merely presented a interesting perspective on this discussion from an article. I can assume that by using my name that you are continuing to be a smart ass Ken. If you have something informative or useful to this discussian on UKraine please offer it up. Other wise quit flaming. Life can be simple BC...isn't yours up there in Sorrento Canada? From small towns come small minds...traveling is a good way to expand one's mind. And it's far better to do than to use drugs to escape.

Very good point russkii and the premise is very respectable. I actually agree with it. Kind of like the US, Brittain, Canada, Austrailia, we are all celtic peoples for the most part and will always stick together when the shit hits the fan. Of course the Celts are also cousins to the the Rus...so who knows perhaps when it comes to major major world issues we too will stick together. Well we shall see here in another year what will happen...Putin is stepping down...the US will elect a new President...the Ukraine will elect one too...will be interesting! |

I know... I wish Russia would also join EU and be done with it...
But there are a lot of obstacles yet to overcome, starting with Russia's own stubborness and pride, not wanting to play by the same rules as the EU, and then there are Poland and the Baltic states, who keep getting between Russia and EU... |
