So I'm talking to a few people over on Thorntree and there is some interest in putting together a group trip for the 004Z train from Moscow to Beijing in January. Dates yet to be determined.

Anybody interested? Not looking to share compartments, but thought it would be kind of neat if we could get a handful of characters on the same train.

Drop me a line if you're interested - we could do our own party train... danbrew@hotmail.com.

Smile

Yes, January! That's part of it. Better than February I suppose. I can only get time away from the prison in January - so that's when I have to go.

the group thing has kind of fallen apart - while some expressed interest, it was tough to decide upon a date that worked for everyone...

Forget the cold - if you cannot, then fly to Jogjakarta and take the train to Surabaya - like I did in 1971. Now that was an experience!!

OTOH, getting a group together is a ROYAL PITA as you have found out.

Taking the train will be an enjoyable experience and WHO NEEDS "naysayers" to tag along. leave those buggers behind - far behind. Focus on the positive aspects....

You will meet incredible people on the trip and perhaps some "westerners". Nevertheless, going by train at any time is an experience that can be both delightful, and boring/irritating. Wink

That said, I WILL take the train from Moscow to Vladivostok in Jan-Feb/08 and I have absolutely NO concerns. I will also go by local transport across the border to Harbin, China and then take an overnight train to Beijing. Hopefully the ice festivals and Chinese New Year's celebrations won't prevent me from getting a comfortable seat/berth. Im'shallah Wink

If I cannot get something comfortable - too bad, the journey will just have to continue. No tears from "moi" Smile
