I used this site to secure my invitation, which was faxed (and emailed) to me. I then collected all of my required bits and pieces and went to the consulate here in Shanghai.

I initially presented a colour copy of the invitation (printed from the email), but they requested that I make a photocopy of it, which I did. I paid my fee, came back 1 week later and had my VISA.

I also have indepenent medical insurance that was accepted without hassle.

No problems.

According to travelers' reports, it is quite problematic to get a Russian visa in Beijing, however, it is easy in Shanghai, as the above post proves.

The Russian consulate in Beijing issues Russian visas only to Chinese citizens and the foreigners who have an official status in China (working or studying). In case it's just travelers, the documents are not accepted.
In Shanghai the Russian visa is issued for everybody, even for travelers (as of June 2004).
Both consulates accept faxed copies (the one in Beijing sometimes may require originals, but rarely), and it's ok to ask for a tourist visa valid up to 30 days.

It is really a bad experience to try to get a Russian visa in Mongolia (Ulan-Bataar) -- many travelers get refused and we strongly advise to get your Russian visa in Shanghai or in the country you originally come from.

For the record, I live and work in Shanghai and am on a Chinese Z-class visa, which I did need a photocopy of for my Russian VISA in Shanghai.

I have no idea how an independent traveller would fare.

Just a short remark about getting a Russian visa in Ulan Bataar. I did this exactkt 2 years ago, with a voucher from great Sherstone hostel in Moscow. The voucher arrived at the Poste Restante in Ulan Bataar in 15 days(while I was travelling around Mongolia), I picked it up and got my Russian visa in 4 days more. No great hassle though they required originals .
