I haven't been able to find chick peas in a single grocery store in Petersburg (neither small ones, or large ones like Perekrestok). Most shops carry various beans by Bonduelle, which for certain offer chick peas (as noted in other countries).

Anyone know a place that has chick peas in Petersburg?

And why not ask while we are on it: any grocery stores especially friendly to vegetarians?

Here in Moscow, I do nearly all my grocery shopping at outdoor 'rynoks'. Twelve months a year.

The rynoks have foodstuffs that the supermarkets don't carry. Rynoks are also the best year-round source for fresh fruits and vegetbles. All foods are cheaper and usually better quality at the rynok than any indoor supermarket.

And yes, in Moscow rynoks I've seen both canned and dried chick peas.

Ask around for the biggest/best supplied food rynok in St. Petersburg and go there. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

There is a very good rynok next to the Sennaya Ploschad metro. Just go out of the metro and turn left, then left again at the first little street you come to. I have never looked for chickpeas there but am sure you will find them. Probably in some of the little shops on the right hand side of the main hall.

There is another good one not far from the Vladimerskaya / Pushkinskaya metro but I cant remember how to get to it if you ask someone in the vicinity they will tell you.

"Lend" (or is it "Land"?) grocery store in the basement of Vladimirsky Passage, near Vladimirsky Metro, is where I FINALLY found chick peas in St P. I've been looking for months. They only have the dried ones, so you'll have to cook them yourself, for 1-2 hours over low heat. I found them in a German package, with directions only in German (which I do not read). I thought they were a common food all over the world - go figure.

Brilliant addition to the question of chick peas in St. Petersburg. I'm sure the original poster is delighted to hear that there are great numbers of Mexicans in the US. Think

They are a common food all over the world. I'm sure you had Middle Eastern "hummus" a chick pea dip? Also, Italians love to put them in pasta dishes, such as, pasta fagioli instead of cannellini beans. Too bad you can't find the pre-cooked chick peas in the can, that would make it easier for you instead of 2 hours cooking them. All the same, I love them.Very Happy

Sorry, my computer did not let me finish. Yes chick peas are a common thing to eat as well as hominy. Has anyone tried Hominy in Russia?

You can buy hommus in many grocery stores in Russia now. Usually it's in the fridge where the pre packaged salads are. The best one is the one with "tahini".

In St P, The Other Side bar also serves hommus

That's great! At least you can enjoy some variety; I make my own hummus with tahini mix. It's so good on pita bread. Now I'm getting hungry. Laughing

I don't even know what this is.

In general, Russians prefer Russian foods, although western and asian cuisines are getting more and more popular, especially in large cities.

It is a certain type of corn, but softer and more flavorful...when you go to the supermarket it is in the can section..unfortunately, you cannot get it fresh from the produce section...also, this is where grits come from...

Regarding corn - is that a big long yellow thing that looks like a dildo? I know some women with high standards use corn in place of a man in the South
