Hi! I have an ambiguous situation and need your advice. My J-1 visa expires at the end of August, but I have been charged with a third-degree assault (misdemeanour) and have to go to court on August 18. Is there any way to extend my stay here, as if I don't appear in court I will automatically be considered as guilty.
Thank you very much!

dude, you're fucken' kidding, right? your visa takes you out of the country on August 1st and you're dicking around with an August 18th domestic court issue?

i'd get on the plane. of course it would all be different if you had to come back...

If the visa expires at the end of august and you need to be in court on august the 18th where is the problem? Are we talking about a russian offence? I'd take some legal advice and check if they can confiscate your passport and check if you don't show up whether they will try and come to get you if you arestill in Russia.
