A friend and I are planning a trip to Russia and are finding it very hard to get our heads around Russian Visas.
We were planning on getting our "invite" through Way To Russia, but then from reading about the Visa Registration when in Russia we are not sure whether we should.
We are going on a budget and so are likely to be staying in hostels during our visit and on WayToRussia it says "If you're staying in a hostel, they'll most likely register your visa only if it was issued with them. It means that if you want to be more flexible in choosing where you live, it's better not to get your visa in hostels, because then you'll be obliged to stay there at least for one night, otherwise they won't register your visa. The reason is that hostels in Russia don't issue the invitations themselves, but do it through affiliate travel agencies, that's why the travel agency rules apply to them as well (see below)."
We don't understand whether this means we have to go through a hostel if we plan on staying in one or if just that if we book through one we have to stay there?
So basically to summarise, we don't know what would be best for us? We are going to stay in hostels and plan on visiting St Petersburg, Novgorod and Moscow.
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. |

All that it really means is that you may have to pay the hostel to register your visa. Since you won't have multiple invitations (just one), it stands to reason that some hostel somewhere "will be put out" (not really) since you didn't get your invite from them. So... given that. Get your invite from WTR, and know you may need to pay the hostels a small amount to register your visa. It's not that big a deal.

I'm traveling to moscow and vladimir. i'll spend a total of 3 days in moscow, at the beginning and end of my trip. the middle of the trip will be spent with a family in vladimir. I'm contemplating getting an invitation thru WayToRussia, but i understand that the party who issues me the invitation must register it. If the WTR visa issuer is amorphous/faceless, and if i'm spending the bulk of my time in vladimir, who regsiters my visa? can the family from vladimir, even tho they didn't issue the invitation? and if they can't, what am i supposed to do?
thanks! |

| The entity that issues the visa support letter is NOT the entity that is responsible for registering your visa. You are. If you overnight at a hotel, they'll do it - perhaps for a fee, perhaps for free. If you overnight at a hostel, probably a fee - although some won't register visas. If you stay with a friend, he/she is responsible for registering your visa with OVIR. |

ok, thanks. when i was in st. pete's last winter the B&B owner did it, and based on what i've been reading lately i thought that was the official way. do you think it's better to register in valdimir, with the family, because i'll be staying three 3+ days, or do you think it matters? |
