Hey,

this summer me and my friends will go to hike in the Altai Mountains.
We will hike around Aktash (or Kuraj).

We will get our Visa about a german tourist office, where we also get the invitation.

We are the hole trip on ourself, no Guide, no Hotels or other contact person from russia.

How do we get a registration in that case?
Lonley Planet says "Importantly youll need a khodataystvo - a letter from whoever sponsored your visa, listing where in Altai youll be be visting.

Is this true?
What is, if we dont have such a list? (Because we are not going to visiti someone, we just go hiking)

Thx and greetings
Sarek

No it's not, unless you want to visit some place with restricted access. You can also try to bribe someone in a cheap hotel to get a registration for some fee for the whole stay. Don't expect policemen to understand that you would come to Russia for hiking, he'll just think that you're crazy.

sarek,

Welcome to the forum.

To make your trip successful, you may need to do some extra research. Have you planned your hiking in some detail - have you plotted it on a map? It seems that you'll be visiting the Altai Republic (to its west is another administrative district named Altai Krai).

Part of the Altai Republic is a restricted area - the border zone. I have not found a map or description of the boundaries of this zone, but according to

http://www.adventuretravel.ru/eng/news/News.htm

it includes the "Altai Range". I strongly suggest that you find out the boundaries of the border zone (and please post them here!), and if necessary change your plans so you will not enter it.

Apparently, to go into the border zone you must begin paperwork (khodataystvo) at least 2 months in advance, and could not hike independently there - you would need to be accompanied by a guide from a Russian company.

Hopefully, your destination is outside the zone, and this won't be a problem for you.

If you go to

http://eng.altai-republic.ru/

and click the link for "Service Information" (on the right-hand side, under the heading "Tourism"), the page says

Quote:
Organizations and private persons are to present a program of stay in two copies to Passport-Visa Service of the Altai Republic Ministry of Home Affairs three days before the entry of invited foreign citizens.

If I understand this rightly, you are supposed to have someone to make paperwork for you in advance of your visit.

I would begin by looking for travel agencies in the Altai Republic. They will know the requirements and how to handle them, and perhaps such a company can take care of your paperwork matters (including the question of registration) for a not very expensive fee.

Whatever you do, and learn in the process ... please post back here, it will be very helpful for other travelers to this region!

Viel Gluck!

Thank you for answears

Our hikingtrip is in the AktruArea (luky) - thank you for the information.

So we are in a "normal" area, but we dont know what to do with the registration.

To try to get a hotel where we can mangage the registration with is a bit unsave.
Is this the normal / only way to get the registration?

Greetings
Sarek

Have you applied for your visas yet? I think your best course of action is to get your invitations from a company that has a presence in Altai, and will help you with registration as part of the package.

For example, if you look at this waytorussia page:

http://www.waytorussia.net/Altay/Aktru.html

it gives contact information for an agency in Tomsk that can book a place for campers at Aktru.

Here's another Russian agency I found:

Registration isn't an issue on the train trip, because you must register only when you spend 3 working days in one place. Will you be making stops of several days anyplace except Altai?

What type of visa did you apply for? A Tourist visa requires you to get an invitation from your host, only registered tour operators and registered hotels can issue Tourist Visa invitations...legally. But many visa services sell 3rd party visa invitations which might work, they have in the past but there has been a recent crack down in that practice. It IS against the law.

So, a tourist who actually gets the correct visa does not have this problem, their registered host will take care of registration for them. If you are not using the hotel that "sponsored" you, you are on your own, any cop or immigration official can earn some money while making your life miserable if they want to since you have legal defense for evading the rules.
Get the correct visa with the correct sponsorship and this will not be a problem.
The best way around this is to book a hotel where you will use as your home base. They will send a proper invitation and register your visa when you check in. That would make your visit a normal tourist visit.
