Hey. My name is Christina McQueen. Im 16 years old and have been planning a trip to Russia for about a year now. I plan to go when I turn 18. So like in June 15, 2011. I know its a long way off but Im young and want this plan to stick.
I wanna travel to Moscow, St. Petersburg and some other places. Um.. I also wanted to know how much cash should I bring. I plan to Be in a 5 star hotel and live life to the fullest. Im not a party girl but I do like to go every now and then. I plan to go to about 2-5 concerts of my favorite Russian singers. I also plan to go shoping.
I would like someone to come with me. They dont have to speak Russian (Im already studying) I dont care if you are male or female. But I would like you to be around my age so no 50 year olds,Sorry. |

Christina,
As someone who has fallen in love with Russia, I am glad that you have such enthusiasm, and can look forward to the excitement of exploring that country. You are lucky to be called Кристина - your name will sound familiar and pleasant to Russian ears! (Their pronunciation of your family name will probably sound funny to you.)
In Sankt Peterburg, during the White Nights (the brief time each year of comfortable weather, and daylight until about 11 PM), a fine hotel room will probably cost more than $1000 per night! Fortunately, you and your спутник (travel companion) might well be able to share an excellent apartment in a great location for less than $80/night (from each of you).
This website is a good place to get practical information and advice about this, and many other questions of Russian travel.
Unfortunately, Moscow and Sankt Peterburg are both very expensive places. I usually average between $100 and $180 per day (including apartment rental). It is possible to spend much less money -- by giving up luxury and convenience, of course!
When it comes to finding a travel companion, may I suggest looking near home? You have about 18 months to plan things out, and there may well be someone in your town, or even someone you already know, who also has a great enthusiasm for Russia. It is nice to travel with a friend, whom you know and trust. It would be extra nice if you can find someone who has visited Russia before.
However you manage things, you can use this forum make some good connections. Some of the folks here live in, or often visit, the cities you are interested in, and will be glad to help you plan a good trip. For example, the odds are pretty good that I will be in Sankt Peterburg in June of 2011 (I've been there every June since 2004, except last June because of the crisis ). Knowing that a first-time visitor is coming, I would certainly offer to be available in case of questions or problems.
It's great that you are studying the language. The more you can learn before your trip, the better your experience is likely to be. Good luck, and keep posting on the forum! |

Thanks. I dont think anyone in my town wants to go to Russia with me. They all think im a crazy kid with too big of dreams. Thats why I ask for a companion. It would be a good way to meet someone New that way we can be freinds or accuantinces. If no one comes with me I can ask my grandma for money for my trip. She can supply any number I can give her. Haha. Thanks again and maby we will see eachother in Russia |

I may not have much to contribute now. But I am planning a trip to St Petersburg May 2010 If you would like while I am there or after I can give you an honest opinon.
Although for myself, I am planning on staying at a hostel. I am not sure if that would be safe for you per say?
I am 24, and have had a friend in Petersburg for like 3 years. I can tell you, the cost of the visa (whether you can go to the embassy in person) Is going to be 131-220 dollars. If it helps find a friend in Saint Petersburg!
As for flights, Germany- St Petersburg, 300-500's by flight, Then depending on your stay at a hostel (10 dollars a day at cheapest i found) Then X amount of food etc. It comes to be expensive even for me. I have 2 grand, and its ranging at 750-800 dollars. (This is just to get into Russia) Excluding my tickets from the USA to Germany.
I do hope the best and hope you get to go as well. But this is my best advice on costs at the moment. I don't mean to dampen any dreams. I did UK, and Germany. May 2009 |

Christina,
I personally know of one 18 year old girl who went on her own. She used to be on this forum years ago. Try and search for "Lizka".
Accommodation wise in St P, why not try a homestay? I did that through the former Intourist and it was great. Brekkie and Dinner laid out at the time I nominated, and all I had to do was be out most of the time.
All this on Pushkinskaya, a mere spitoon from the station and right near Nevsky Prospekt which is the main drag.
Moscow....expensive and a homestay could see you staying god-know's-where.
I am not Rabidweevil, Usualsuspect is me. When the website changed over to use this newfangled surrogate login deal "Usualsuspect" went into the ether.
Regards
