We're going to Helsinki in July and would like to visit St. Petersburg for a few days (3-4 days, 2-3 nights, maybe). What would be the least expensive, reliable method of travel between these two destinations?

The other problem I foresee is that we really need to have confirmed reservations on whatever mode of travel we choose because we're going to be paying $300+ for the visas (there are 3 of us), plus the cost of visa support invitations and we want to be sure we get there.

Thank you! Smile

I spent last summer in SPB(and Helsinki) and I found something called a "shopping bus"that most RUSSIANS dont know about, that leaves from just south of the Helsinki railway ststion in front of the sporting goods store. The operators speak only Russian but were quite happy to have me aboard and I found fellow passengers always spoke some English and it was a happy trip.

TOTAL cost 1 way was 12Euros. That is NOT a misprint..12E. The bus is subsidised by the stores the bus stops at along the way. The trip TO SPB took 9 hours and the return overnight trip was more like 8 hours BUT the price was right. On the return trip the bus mgr treated me like royalty.

The Helsinki buses leave from the sporting goods store at noon(getting to SPB at 8pm) and the SPB buses stand near Vosstania metro and leave somewhere around 7pm (getting into Helsinki the following AM)for the return trip.

My Russian friends I was visiting were amazed by this bus and now use it monthy instead of taking the Repino or Sibelius at like $200 r/t.

Yes it is. They still hand out ads or those buses on Vosstanaya square. A year ago the price was 500 R, haven't asked since.
