How do I go about finding and hiring a really good translator in L'viv, Moscow, and Kirov? I need someone who is familiar with e-commerce technology jargon and who doesn't charge much (I'm a faculty researcher, so I don't have much money). Any ideas?

I planned never to deal with this web site again - oh here goes

1st reaction: "The Moscow Times"; "Kiev Post".. English-lang papers, but you have to be there (eg, pick one up at Doug&Marty's Boarhouse) to access it. BETTER: put an ad out in a local ads-oriented paper, almost every russian city has one. Same problem, only worse: Russian language; local newspaper office; operated by [non-english-speaking] Russians. But it's the more serious approach. Much bigger readership. BTW, you didn't state where you are or how you intend to pay - the answer varies depending on your parameters. Are you in those cities? Hell you can paste little signs on streetcorner posts too. Marketing 101 (I'm not gonna write a whole book here). Assuming you're far away, like say ... ATLANTA (i can't wait to get the hell out of here), the BEST method: post an ad in one or more of:
http://www.rabota.com, http://www.rabota.ru, or http://job.avanport.com
since you mentioned Lvov, for Ukraine it would be:
http://www.rabotaplus.com.ua, http://www.jobs.com.ua,
http://ajob.com.ua, http://ukrjob.net

if you're far away, like California or the moon, you won't get a lot of responses (logical; imagine an offer for work in the NY Times from a Russian), but it's a start. Plus it's free. Since you're looking for a translator, the ad obviously need not be in Russian. Lesser problem - navigating these web sites (we don't know how much Russian you know, if any). Also If you don't have KOI-8 character set (or its variants) installed, these web sites may appear as strange squiggly lines. Big problem I foresee is payment. Western Union is the obvious answer but you're then completely exposed to getting ripped off.

Thanks, Vettra!

I'm even more remote than CA...I'm in UT and have the same feelings about blowing out of Dodge.

Yes. I'll be in each of those cities for a week. What little Russian I learned before my trip 2 years ago has pretty much disappeared and I'm going to be too busy preparing my own materials to have time to brush up on it much. I'll check out the urls you provided. Much thanks.

My experience with the "Hugh Grant look-alike, sound-alike" translator last time was that he selectively omitted some key responses from my Russian counterpart and did not translate correctly some of my phrases. My young Russian host filled me in later on what had happened, but it was too late. I need to be more careful this time, so want to get this lined up before I go. The hosting organization paid for the translator last time, so I don't know fees.

Thanks again for jumping back on this website to answer my query.
